The crow lands right on his arm like it doesn't know what he is. It's in the name - scarecrow. Scare crow. Scare crow.

The other karasu like to tell him he's strange for staying when Rin comes, but Karasu's not sure about that - it'd be boring of him to go south, it'd be strange of him to go north in search of Rin. Therefore, in Karasu's estimation, it's more that he's being about as ordinary as a karasu can be, staying right where he is.

It is, as far as Tabito can tell, a perfectly ordinary squirrel. So it makes perfect sense, then, that the big cone on the pole would stop it from climbing up to steal some of Tabito's treats.

When he was little, Rin used to pretend he was some kind of sea creature, a monster with long tendrils of seaweed he could control - he wouldn't even let anyone cut his hair through the summer, just so he could watch it trail around the corners of his vision with his movement through the water. And he would pretend, when he got annoyed with someone else at the beach, to drag them down into the depths of the ocean, down to their watery grave.
