Kansas City History Lesson 23: Sauer Castle. The story behind the generations of the Sauer family are a whole other story for another time. Sauer Castle is considered one of the finest examples of an Italianate villa in the state of Kansas. Architectural historian Cydney Millstein suspects it was designed by Asa Beebe Cross, the first professional architect in Kansas City, Mo. The house was completed in 1871 and included a winery, grape arbor, bakery and schoolhouse for the children. Now, those features are all gone and the house is empty and in disrepair. You turn the corner and see a high chain-link fence surrounding a foreboding house out of a ghost story: it’s a three-story, red-brick, Victorian home with a high tower at the top and carved lions framing the doorway.
