Migration notice for Ponyhoof on Greasemonkey/Scriptish users

On mid-November 2017, Firefox 57 will be released and many legacy extensions that have not been updated to use their new WebExtensions system will no longer work.

To avoid inconvenience, it is recommended that you remove Ponyhoof from Greasemonkey or Scriptish, and reinstall Ponyhoof at https://jointheherd.little.my that is ready to support the latest Firefox.

To check if you are affected:

Go to about:addons in the Firefox address bar

Check if you have a User Scripts section at the left

If you do not have a User Scripts section...

Ponyhoof should be installed as an Extension, if it is, then you are not affected :)

If you do have a User Scripts section, and Ponyhoof is located inside it...

Follow the instructions below to get a copy of your Ponyhoof settings first before uninstalling

Uninstall Ponyhoof

Optional: If you don’t have any other use for Greasemonkey/Scriptish, feel free to uninstall them entirely

Reinstall Ponyhoof at https://jointheherd.little.my

Restore your settings

To get a copy of your Ponyhoof settings to restore later:

Go to www.facebook.com

Open Ponyhoof Options

Click the Misc tab at the top of Ponyhoof Options 5 times to reveal the hidden Debug options

Scroll to the bottom and click Open settings editor

Click Save settings to file and save the text file to somewhere, such as your Downloads folder

After you reinstalled Ponyhoof at https://jointheherd.little.my , you can load back your Ponyhoof settings:

Go to www.facebook.com

If the “Welcome to Ponyhoof” screen appears, then select any random pony and close it

Re-open the settings editor (see above)

Click Load settings from file and select the text file you just saved

User script going public

My user script that I am working on is going public for the PMD-Roleplay site... If you have a feature you want added, feel free to message me onsite or here.

Be sure to vote on those ideas though!! The more votes, the more likely I will implement them.

Currently, the user script is not released, however this is meant to be more of an announcement on the project.

Reusing page jQuery in a Greasemonkey script

Many times I've used a RIA or a website and wanted it to behave differently or have an additional functionality that I need. Thanks to Greasemonkey this is possible.

We live in a jQueritifed world where most of the web pages use jQuery.

That's why on of the things that I need to do most of the time when I write a userscript is to reuse the jQuery from the webpage without loading a new jQuery instance from the web. This will make my script much more responsive and who needs to load something that is already there.

Let's take a close look at the code. First we need to declare the global jQuery and $ variables. We'll populate the with the jQuery instance.

Next is the addJQuery function. Here we use the unsafeWindow objects. This gives us access to the web page underlying window object. From there we obtain a reference to jQuery by using window.jQuery.noConflict(). The noConflict function is required so that our script can stay undetected from the main page.

This approach will work only in Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension. For Opera we need another less elegant approach. We create a div element on the document and then get the window object through a click handler. This is the only solution I've found so far so if you know a better way do this feel free to share it.

All we have to do after that is to write our customization code using the full force of jQuery. The pageModifiers at the bottom of the script is an associative array that I use. It makes it really simple to attach code to different page in the same domain (as you'll need most of the time). The key is a substring from the URL and if it's matched then the value - your handler function will be called.

This boilerplate code can be used not only for Greasemonkey or Scriptfish, but for Opera and Google Chrome userscripts.

NOTE (04.23.2014):

This method doesn't work in Chrome anymore. You'll have add jQuery in your extension folder or load it.
