Join us for a Public Forum on the State of African Centered Theological Education on Friday 9/19 and for the 2014 Jeremiah Wright Lecture on Saturday 9/20!
Speakers at the Congress on Urban Ministry on the theme Together Building a Just Economy called out the Congress and President Obama for their inability to act justly in regards to immigration. One of these leaders was Bishop Sally Dyck. Her powerful challenge to the Congress on Urban Ministry was preceded by Ms. Elvira Arrillano, an immigrant from Mexico who sought refuge in her church – the Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago. She told her story and the story of the children that are now detained at the border. Bishop Dyck picked up the thread: There will probably be 90,000 children coming to the US border this year, she said. That’s 92% more than last year. The violence in Honduras especially is forcing them to come because their parents are working here. The violence that undergirds our broken immigration policies is threatening the children. This is the call and the challenge. God is calling us to intervene in this sad story of immigration. Are you willing to say to President Obama, be generous! This land is their land too. We are tethered to the immigrants to this country and always will be. Fix this broken policy! We have no alternative but to be involved, she said -- our story of salvation is a story of immigration.
