Once again, I sat at my desk, staring at the screen with a familiar sense of anticipation. This time, my fingers hovered over the tablet, poised to create another digital piece that I knew would consume hours of focused work, but also of joy. The character at this project's centre was Liliana Oleander, one of my original creations who holds a special place in my heart. She is more than just a figure I’ve drawn countless times; she represents my ideal romantic love.
Liliana is the sweetheart of Arlon, her beloved companion and my male lead character who, together with Liliana, embodies everything I envision about love—pure, beautiful, passionate, yet tender. Creating art that features her is always a deeply personal experience, almost like spending time with someone dear. Through Liliana, I can explore and express my own emotions and desires in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling. Each stroke of the brush or pencil brings me closer to understanding the depths of my own heart, making her more than just a character, but a reflection of my innermost self.
This latest artwork portrays Liliana in a moment of vulnerability and tranquillity, indulging in a relaxing bubble bath. There’s something inherently calming about this scene, a simplicity that speaks to the joy found in moments of solitude. As I started working on it, I knew I wanted to capture not just her beauty but also the feeling of serenity that comes from these quiet, reflective times. The way the light filters through the bubbles and dances on her skin creates a sense of peacefulness that I hope resonates with viewers. It's a reminder to embrace moments of stillness and self-care in our busy lives.
Liliana, true to her nature, prefers to bathe in the dark. It’s a trait of hers that I’ve always found intriguing, and one I decided to lean into for this artwork. To her, darkness doesn’t represent something to be feared or avoided. Instead, it is a blanket of calm, an embrace of quietude that enhances her relaxation. Over time, Liliana has come to believe that her penchant for bathing in dimly lit settings is one of the secrets to her exceeding beauty. The cool, soft glow that surrounds her in these moments, coupled with the warm water and the scent of delicate soaps, creates an atmosphere of pure serenity. It’s as if the darkness itself contributes to the glow of her skin, to the softness of her features.
In this particular piece, I paid careful attention to the way the bubbles floated around her, almost as if they were enchanted, glowing softly in the darkness. They add to the mystique of the scene, with each bubble reflecting faint traces of light. They are delicate, and fleeting, and serve as a perfect contrast to the quiet strength that Liliana embodies. I wanted them to seem almost magical, to float around her as if they had a life of their own, amplifying the peace of the moment. The way they catch the light against the darkness also adds a sense of depth and texture to the scene.
Liliana’s expression was, without a doubt, the most important element for me to capture in this piece. She’s smiling softly, her large, bright blue eyes glistening with contentment. Her smile isn’t wide or exaggerated but serene, reflective of someone who is completely at peace with herself and her surroundings. Her gaze is directed slightly upward as if she’s lost in a pleasant thought or admiring the bubbles floating in front of her. I wanted to give her a look of utter bliss, a moment where the world fades away, leaving only the warmth of the bath and the quiet hum of her thoughts.
I spent a lot of time on the lighting in this piece. Darkness, though calming, can be tricky to depict. I needed to find a way to show Liliana’s form and features without losing the essence of the dimly lit setting she prefers. To achieve this, I opted for a soft blue glow that gently outlines her face, her hair, and the bubbles surrounding her. It’s a glow that doesn’t overpower the scene but enhances it, giving Liliana an almost ethereal quality. She looks otherworldly, her skin glowing in the faint light, her hair clinging to her damp shoulders as the water flows down her form. This subtle lighting was key in maintaining the calm, intimate feeling I wanted to evoke.
Liliana’s hair is always a focal point in my art, and in this piece, it’s no different. It falls in long, damp waves around her shoulders, its deep, dark colour contrasting beautifully against the soft light and the bubbles floating nearby. The water has given it a sleek, shiny texture, and I tried to capture the way it clings to her skin. There’s something incredibly intimate about wet hair, about the way it sticks to the body, and I wanted that detail to come through. Her hair frames her face, adding to the overall softness of the piece.
The scene itself was inspired by one of my favourite moments in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, where Ariel is being taken care of with a luxurious bubble bath. There’s a playfulness in that scene, an innocence that I wanted to incorporate into my work. While Liliana’s bath is more serene and more reflective, the bubbles add a sense of lightness and fun that echoes Ariel’s experience. Both scenes share that feeling of indulgence, of a brief escape from reality into a world of warmth and comfort. As I worked, I imagined Liliana enjoying the same kind of peaceful solitude, letting the water soothe her as the bubbles floated lazily around her.
As with all my artwork, this piece was a labour of love. I spent hours perfecting the details, from the way the water reflects off her skin to the tiny highlights in her eyes that give her expression life. I wanted every element to work together to create a cohesive, immersive experience. The soft lighting, the bubbles, the peaceful look on Liliana’s face—all of it was designed to draw the viewer in, to make them feel as though they, too, are in the room with her, sharing in this quiet, intimate moment.
There’s a delicate balance when working with such dark tones. Too much shadow and the scene could easily become foreboding, losing the peacefulness I wanted to convey. Too much light and the magic of Liliana’s preference for darkness would be lost. I had to find a middle ground, where the shadows wrapped around her like a comforting blanket, but the light still caught on the most important details, bringing them to life. The interplay between light and shadow in this painting creates a sense of depth and mystery, enhancing the overall atmosphere. It was a challenge to capture Liliana's essence in this way, but ultimately, the result is a captivating and immersive piece of art.
Liliana’s relationship with darkness is something I’ve always found fascinating. While some see the dark as something to be avoided, as a place where fears and uncertainties lurk, Liliana sees it as a refuge. For her, the absence of bright light is calming. It allows her to retreat into herself, to let go of the outside world and simply be. In this piece, I wanted to show that side of her, to illustrate how her beauty is not just in her physical appearance, but in the way she moves through the world, and how she finds peace and calm in the places others might overlook.
Working on this piece reminded me of why I love creating art, especially art featuring characters like Liliana. It’s not just about drawing a pretty picture; it’s about capturing a moment, an emotion, and sharing that with others. Through Liliana, I’m able to explore themes of love, beauty, and tranquillity in ways that feel deeply personal to me. She’s a character who represents everything I hold dear, and every time I draw her, I feel like I’m sharing a part of myself with the world.
As I finished the piece, I took a step back and looked at it with fresh eyes. Liliana, surrounded by bubbles, bathed in soft, blue light, looked exactly as I had hoped—peaceful, serene, and utterly content. Her expression, her posture, the way the bubbles floated lazily around her—it all came together to create a scene that felt both intimate and magical. I couldn’t help but smile, knowing that I had once again captured a little bit of the magic that Liliana brings to my life.
Creating this artwork was not just about depicting Liliana in a bubble bath; it was about capturing a feeling of peace and tranquillity, a moment of quiet reflection in a world that is often too loud and chaotic. Through her, I hope to convey the idea that beauty is not just in the grand gestures or the bright lights, but in the quiet moments, the simple pleasures, and the spaces where we feel most at peace. In her serene expression and relaxed posture, I saw a reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty in everyday moments.
In the end, this piece is more than just an image of Liliana—it’s a reminder that sometimes, the most beautiful moments are the ones we experience when we’re alone with our thoughts, wrapped in the comfort of the dark, and surrounded by the things that make us feel most at ease. For Liliana, that’s a warm bubble bath in the soft glow of the night, and for me, it’s the act of creating her, of bringing her to life on the screen, one brushstroke at a time. It's a reminder to cherish the simple pleasures in life and find solace in solitude. The process of creating art can be a therapeutic escape from the chaos of everyday life.
