young tony soprano in the many saints of newark

still feels like a fever dream
some scattered thoughts bc i’m rewatching some season six episodes: can never shake that feeling that any moment artie and tony might’ve murdered each other, if they didn’t live vicariously through each other. yes, they found each other amusing and their friendship goes back, but there were so many times! so many times where a scene could’ve easily ended in a brawl and not a food fight. artie sees the tough bad ass take no shit tony and wishes to be like him, but all of his attempts at being anything at all like tony fail because he’s inherently a good person. tony sees artie be normal and struggle and go through ups and downs of business and marriage, recognizing even the depressive episodes reflective in artie, but he fails at true consolation because his inherently bad nature leads to enabling artie to the point of destruction. if a normal guy like artie can fail, then that normalcy is invalidated and, though it absolutely does not equate, it reassures tony that at least in his world he has some measure of control, especially economically. tony is deeply defensive about his criminality and no one truly calls him out on it the way artie does. not even melfi, though she does it a lot and constantly. by holding to the policy of “do no harm” it means tony won’t ever tell her the complete truth so as to not incriminate himself. she’s, in a way, protected. artie has no such protection and he has even less information than melfi. they have an affectionate trust that holds together because of tradition, but tony is literally willing to blow it all away, and artie knows that.
