James stood in front of his bedroom mirror checking his outfit and trying to flatten his hair, making sure he looked his best. Whatever else happened tonight, he would not let Regulus down by looking like he had been dragged through a hedge backwards.
“Jaime, are you ready?” Regulus’ voice asked from their bedroom door.
“Do I look alright?” James hadn’t been this nervous in years.
Regulus stood behind him and wrapped his arms around James’ waist, leaning his chin on James’ shoulder.
“You look stunning, Love, as you know you do.”
“I won’t embarrass you?”
“I mean, probably at some point, but not because of how you’re dressed.” Regulus joked, as he squeezed James’ hips. “Now, come on, before the car leaves without us.”
Their car pulled up outside the theatre and although the cheers were muffled, James could tell it would be deafening when the door opened. His throat closed up and he felt himself go rigid.
“I can’t!” James whispered.
“Jaime, it’s okay.” Regulus gripped his hand and pulled James by the chin to face him. “I know, okay. Yes, it is going to be horrible for a few minutes. There will be lots of people shouting your name and a lot of camera flashes, but I will be at your side the entire time.” Regulus stroked his cheek. “We only stay on that carpet as long as we have to, then we’ll go inside and get a drink.” James leaned in to touch his forehead to Regulus’. “And remember, as much as I love you, the chances of you winning are slim to none, so we can just stay in our seats and get drunk.”
Regulus pulled him in and kissed him lightly. James took the few seconds they had to try and get his breathing under control.
“Okay,” he whispered. “Let’s get this over and done with.”
Twenty minutes later, James was safely inside and being handed a large whiskey by the bartender, whilst Regulus soothingly rubbed his back.
“JAMES!” A voice screamed his name and he spun around to see Sirius pushing himself through the crowded bar to get to him, Remus trailing behind him.
“Hey, Sirius.” James’ voice and hands were shaking still, but he managed to hug Sirius and Remus hello.
“You survived then?” Remus asked, noticing the tremble.
“Just about,” James winced. “Honestly, how you two do this all the time I just don’t know.”
“Booze.” Remus and Sirius answered at the same time, all four of them burst into laughter.
“Duly noted.” James continued laughing, as he felt himself calming down.
The lights above them started blinking and all four men moved into the auditorium to take their seats.
As the night passed, James felt a light buzzing in his veins from excitement at being in these hallowed halls with all this incredible talent.
Eventually, his category was upon them and James was starting to shift in his seat.
David Tennant was on stage introducing Pamela bloody Anderson to announce the “Leading Actor” results.
“And the winner is…” Pamela Anderson opened the sealed envelope and James grabbed a hold of Sirius’ hand, sure she was about to read out his name. “James Potter.”
The world went into slow motion and James felt his draw drop. Sirius was screaming in his ear and was pulling him onto his feet.
Once James was standing, Sirius wrapped him in a tight hug, then Remus hugged him, and then Regulus kissed him and pushed him into the aisle.
As James walked up the steps of the stage, the noise in the room roared in his ears. He hugged Pamela Anderson, accepted his BAFTA mask and then stood in front of the podium.
“This doesn’t seem real, which is a very eloquent way to start a speech, but I’m sorry to say, I don’t have one prepared, because my darling husband, the light of my life, told me there was no way I was going to win.” The room burst into laughter and the camera panned to Regulus who was blushing and trying to hide his face in his hands.
“So, I guess I’m going to have to do this off the cuff. I would like to thank my partner in crime, Sirius Lupin, for convincing me to take this part and I would like to thank his husband, Remus Lupin, for writing the script and making it so perfect. To my mum and dad, who I wish were here to see this, but who decided to take a holiday to Jamaica instead, because they also believed Regulus when he said I would lose to Sirius. To Harry, our beautiful 5 year old, who did believe I was going to win and was gutted he wouldn’t be allowed to come with me, but his mum is letting him stay up, so Haz, if you’re still awake, go to bed! It’s too late for you to be up!” The room laughed again and James grinned along as he thanked a few more people.
James paused and took a deep breath.
“Lastly, to my incredible husband, who is my rock, my heart and my everything. Without him I wouldn’t be standing on this stage at all. Mostly because I almost didn’t get out of the car, but also because whenever I doubted myself, felt like I wasn’t good enough, couldn’t sleep with the nerves, Regulus was there, talking me down and reminding me I can do anything I put my mind to. So, baby, this one is for you. I love you, mi estrella. Now, I’d better get off this stage before I do something stupid like flirt with Pamela Anderson in front of my husband.”
The room roared with applause and James blew Regulus a kiss as he waltzed off the stage.
