Timboon Christie’s Cut Whisky Timboon Railway Shed Distillery is pretty much exactly what it says on the label. Located in the tiny town of Timboon, in Western Victoria, the distillery is set up in an old railway shed and produces an array of spirits and liqueurs, including this single malt whisky. Named after Detective Inspector Christie, the ex-boxer / bodyguard to Prince Alfred / master of disguise who was hired by the government to stamp out the illegal distilling practices of bootlegger Tom Delaney, who was renowned for his high-quality whisky, which was made in Timboon. The whiskey itself is a beautiful example of an unrestrained single malt Australian scotch whiskey, displaying a balance of flavours with a pleasant viscosity and very smooth, clean finish. Nose: Fruit, vanilla, butterscotch & smoke. Palate: Big and rich, chewy, mild spice. Went birthday-tripping to the rural Victorian area of Timboon and immediately made a bee-line to the Timboon Distillery to drown myself in whisky and sample what was billed as an “Open Beef Burger” that sounded delicious. Let’s just say I wasn’t prepared for this level of openness as I was presented with a disappointing stack of vaguely-burger-related ingredients piled on top of a sad, solitary piece of toast. Fortunately my #notaburger fears were obliterated by one of the most delicious not-burgers I’ve ever eaten! Aside from the unnecessary fried egg on top, every single ingredient in this bad boy from the wooden board up was absolutely perfect. The sourdough was crunchy, the sauce tasty, the onions sweet and careml-y, the brie melty and creamy, the bacon crispy and salty, the beef juicy and packed with flavour and the hidden slow-roasted tomato gave it a nice ketchupy finish. Overall the meal was SO GODDAMNED GOOD I immediately wanted another, and the side chips and my partner’s soft plliowy gnocchi with fall-apart beef-cheek ragu still got demolished as they were also well up to scratch.
That’s some amazing food you got there Timboon Distillery, just wouldn’t really bill it as a burger.
Also the whisky was rad! Top points.
