there  is ,   for  better  or  worse ,   no  official  welcoming  committee  to  the  great  mining  town .    the  pioneers  who  find  their  way  here  are  usually  left  to  fend  for  themselves ,   getting  settled  on  their  own  terms .     everybody  knows  who  really  runs  the  town .     there  is  the  mayor ,  of  course ,   and  the  town  busy - bodies ,   who  know  everyone’s  business . . .    but  the  mining  company  owns  thunder  mesa ,   and  the  streets  belong  to  them .     of  course ,   there  is  always  melanie ,   a  welcome  ( if  rare )   presence  in  town ,   and  a  friendly  face  to  every  stranger .             ❝  i  do  hope  the  journey  wasn’t  too  difficult , ❞          she  says ,  offering  the  girl  in  braids  a   sympathetic  smile .             ❝  so  many  troubles  lay  on  the  road . . .   but  you’re  here  now ,  and  hopefully  here  to  stay !  ❞

❛  oh, don’t worry, they’re just   ---  spiders. ❜           nose wrinkled in distaste, evelyn smacks at one of the giant crawling things with her rolled - up magazine.   they’re all over the carriage   ;   apparently, this section of barcelona has a problem, and now they’re basically being attacked.   just a few travelling difficulties.          ❛  find something to smack them with, they’re probably not poisonous    ---    just don’t let them bite you!  ❜

“You know what would be fun to do on Halloween since we’re too old to go trick-or-treating,” Anita asked, not at all bothered to hear anyone ask ‘what’ in response to her question before moving on to answer herself. “I think it would be super fun to download the horror movie rules and have a horror movie marathon -- every time someone breaks a rule, we take a shot.”

And what had been left unsaid was that Anita hadn’t been lucky enough, in her youth, to watch horror movies like other kids her age. She had been teaching herself to read and to write more than her own name in her pre-teens thanks to her biological family and their allegiance to an ass backwards “community”.

anna entered her dorm room, closing the door shut behind her for a moment of reprieve. heart fluttering, it was almost as if it hadn’t stopped all week. everything exciting, everything new-- being out of the house and on her own was opening doors that’d never been open before.

and her poor, new roommate had a front row seat to watch her ride through freshman year.
