a thing that i have realized lately is that, like, kylo ren just doesn’t work on me. i just don’t get it. i see all these people being fascinated with his character, and saying adam driver is doing such phenomenal work, and that he eludes this complex air of sexy fascinating anguished darkness or what have you, and i just don’t get it. i don’t see it. i feel like it’s an episode of arrested development and i’m michael bluth saying “her?” on an endless loop. it’s not that i just hate kylo and all he does and stands for! (though i do, i really do!) even beyond that, he’s just so … meh. so underwhelming. so bland. so utterly nothing to me. what is the rest of the world seeing that i just do not see??? what is it??????????

It’s an actor being given absolutely nothing and, in an inverse Ewan McGregor, doing that nothing as tense as possible. George Lucas gave Obi-Wan a lot of great shit to stew over but with terrible dialogue, whilst the sequels have given Adam Driver a lot of hot air he has to infuse with as much meaning as a performer can ring out of a damp napkin

he really FEELS like he’s a wimp holding on by a thread desperate to do literally anything because Adam Driver understands that this character is pathetic and he, as an actor, is desperately hoping for something to do with legitimate pathos or grit or intimidation or anguish that the script won’t provide

every muscle in Adam Driver’s face is torturing itself trying to create a connection with other characters or even the camera but his character just has nothing substantial to work with external to himself and he can’t. after stabbing Han Solo he has literally nothing meaningful or engaging to do in scenes besides neg people and yell but Adam Driver yearns for him to and most viewers are subconsciously feeling that energy instead of the character. It’d be like if Han Solo’s dialogue consisted solely of him talking about how the millennium falcon did the Kessel run and lightsabers will never be as good as blasters, and that was it, just a bunch of world-based expositional sentences with no natural repartee with other characters and no grudges developed in full scenes. Kylo Ren is Sad Anger Gaslight Man and that’s what Adam Driver had to work through and you can feel it
