Hospital Playlist - Reply Series & Prison Playbook Parallelism #6 - A Change in Haircut

Happy New Year! It has been a while. ^-^ This writer hopes everyone is safe and healthy as we face the next page in our lives. As we know, Hospital Playlist S2 will begin filming at the end of this month, around 20th January 2021. Let’s pray that all of the production staff and casts can film the series in a safe environment and that everybody will stay healthy as filming ends.
A few days ago a friend, @thisiskitsune has asked this writer on the possible reason behind the choice of haircut among the female leads from ShinLee’s dramas, including Prison Playbook. Why do ShinLee duo like a short haircut for their main female leads? To many people, especially girls, the simple reason for their choice of haircut is for it to be a marker for change. A dear Korean friend shared that to cut one’s hair usually means a change in one’s mind because she has experienced something big like a breakup or quitting a job. There are plenty other reasons based on Korean history and culture. However, this Writer will not go there since we are not talking about a historical drama ^-^.
Does the haircut is a choice made by the actress or it is decided beforehand because it has meaning to the story in the drama? According to her interview, Krystal informed that Shin PD recommended to her to cut her hair short for Prison Playbook since she could better represent her role as Ji Ho (mydaily.co.kr). Jeon Mido also stated that Shin PD decided the perfectly crude fashion for Song Hwa during her college year (Elle Korea). This means for all other female lead’s characters, including Song Hwa in Hospital Playlist, Shin PD and Writer Lee Woo Jung have a say on their haircut style as well as general rule on their fashion perhaps because it somehow will have a meaning to their personalities and stories.
With this simple reason in mind, let us take a look at the possible meaning of this in the love story of the main OTPs in the Reply Series and Prison Playbook as well as what it could possibly mean for our main OTP in Hospital Playlist.
In R1997, Siwon had a long hair during her school years. Then her father cut it as a reprimand. She then kept her long hair.
Siwon rejected Yoon Jae and have had an unconfirmed relationship with Yoon Jae’s brother, Tae Woong.
Yoon Jae never dated anyone. Even after he was rejected he has always kept Siwon in his heart. Siwon is Yoon Jae’s first love.
In R1994, Najung had a short hair from her college years until she got married.
Trash has romantically dated other girl.
Najung never dated anyone. Even when Trash has a girlfriend she waited for him. Trash is Najung’s first love.
In R88, Deok Sun had a short hair during school years. Then she kept a long hair.
Deok Sun’s first love (or so she thought) was Seonwoo and she romantically dated other guys after her school years.
Although he has had casual dates with other girls, Taek has always liked and waited for Deok Sun. Deok Sun is Taek’s first love.
In Prison Playbook, Ji Ho had long hair until she entered college. Then she kept a short hair.
Ji Ho has romantically dated other guys.
Je Hyuk never dated anyone. He has always been there and waited quietly for Ji Ho. Ji Ho is Je Hyuk’s first love.
It seems that for ShinLee, their view on love remains constant. The love that they believe in is something that will grow over long period of time. Yes, it involves a first love but it is NOT a first love that just happens within few months. Not only that, their OTPs have grown to understand and get accustomed to each other’s strengths and flaws. This is the view of a true and everlasting love for ShinLee.
Now that we have seen the patterns/ formula applied in their previous dramas, let’s derive a constant hypothesis from these patterns.
H1 : If the girl had a change of haircut, she has had a moment of big change in her love life i.e. breakup(s). The guy will be the one who is faithful to his first love and never romantically dated other girls.
H2 : If the girl never had a change of haircut, she has been faithful to her first love. The guy will be the one who has romantically dated other girls.
How does this play out in Hospital Playlist?
In Hospital Playlist, Song Hwa had a long hair in her college years. Then she kept a short hair.
Song Hwa has romantically dated other guys. In this case, this Writer will apply H1 which means the guy in HP main OTP shall be the one who never romantically dated other girls. He is the one who is faithful to his first love, Song Hwa.
Will the same formula be used for HP? If yes, who could this guy be? This writer will let her dear readers draw their own conclusion.
