We will discuss what we learned at VidCon. This will be a two part episode.
We are live! Come hangout with us and discuss what we learned at VidCon. Ask us questions and tell us what you learned if you were there.

Our hangout with We Are St Elmo’s Fire is now in podcast form. We discussed filmmaking, community, and running a collab channel.

This is the podcast of our hangout with @youcanscienceit and Childish Wonder. We had so much fun talking with them and learning from them.

This is our goals hangout from October. We felt like we were standing in an open field trying to pick where to go.
Next month we will be revisiting goals and setting up channel purposes. We’ll talk about how we’ve progressed and more importantly what we’ve learned. This new discussion will also include a help, hub, hero content discussion.
We will discuss NerdCon Storytelling and how to tell stories on YouTube. Storytelling can be used in all forms of content creation. Leslie: https://www.youtube.com/user/lesliefoundhergrail https://ww
We are releasing older hangouts as podcasts with show notes! It is the audio taken from the hangout with added links.
This is our conversation with @foundhergrail about storytelling and @nerdconstories. She had lots of wonderful suggestions for channels to watch and podcasts to listen to. They are all in the show notes of this podcast and in the description of the YouTube hangout.
A deep dive into how the YouTube algorithm works and what factors go into how, where, when, and why your videos are displayed.
This is pretty much the presentation given in the Industry track.
After reading it, I realized that if you really truly hate a video, then you should start watching it for only a few seconds and then quit YouTube all together. This will really mess them up for the next 5 videos they release. And you thought a thumbs down was bad. This will make sure people don’t even see their content to have the chance to give it a thumbs down.
We’ll discuss this more on our VidCon recap videos on July 20th and August 1st.
Apps and software won’t solve everything, but sometimes they help (and sometimes they make things worse).
Just wanted to let you know these programs are on sale. I personally use Scrivener, Scapple, and TextExpander all the time. And I just picked up TaskPaper.
Scrivener - Powerful writing tool
Snapple - A simple mind mapping tool
TextExpander - Automates your daily writing from filling out your e-mail address to short cuts for commonly used phrases to creating custom forms for you to fill out. It is hard for me to describe this. But if you want to use it, here are some great tutorials.
I love Scrivener and Scapple, but I don’t think they are for everyone. TextExpander is for anyone trying to automate writing on the computer (scripts to e-mails). I’m not sure what the other programs are.
Real-world examples of the frameworks in action. Learn a streamlined process to develop made-for-web content—that audiences choose to watch. - Level up your ...
This is the biggest thing I learned on Friday at the YouTube Space. They teach this framework to brands and you don’t see it in regular Create Academy stuff. I’ll talk about this a lot more on one of our upcoming hangouts but this is the heart of it:
Hero- content that gets you spikes in views. This can be a huge project you work on or a collab or something really timely. These videos don’t appear on your channel often but they bring an huge influx of viewers.
Hub - This is your regular content which makes people subscribe. This is what makes your channel unique.
Help - Content that people are searching for. From what I can tell, this is what brings people into you channel from search results. These are rarer than Hub but more frequent that Hero. This isn’t why people subscribe, but it is how they find you.
Here is another video I found: https://youtu.be/Qqm8doYtcrY
Hope this helps. We will talk a lot more about how to implement this in July and August.
Who’s with me?
Who wants YouTube to be their side hustle?
I think everyone in the WCE community wants to make better content and strengthen their community. There is nothing wrong with posting when you want to and having a steady community. Those are some of the absolute best YouTube channels.
But I’m looking for those people who want to actively and earnestly push their channel ahead. I know there is work and life and kids and all the things. I listen to startup and productivity podcasts a lot. Most of them had kids and work and they created their business in the early morning or evening and called it their “side hustle.” I want to build a framework to help us achieve our goals.
I want us each to create a strategic plan for our channels and an action plan as to how to execute this strategy. I want to set up a task manager system that we all use. You control your own, but we can all be your accountability partners to make sure you are on track. Tasks will be put into 3 categories.
Skills
New skills you want to learn or improve like lighting, editing, sound, animation, performance, script writing, thumbnails, closed captions, and so on. These are the things that make your content better. We can’t learn all the skills at once. We will prioritize them and create tasks about how to accomplish them.
Content
This is the heart of your channel. We will discuss how often you want to create certain types of content. I learned yesterday that channels should have 3 types. Hero, which is your bigger flashier videos that take a long time but bring in lots of views. Hub, which is your consistent content at the heart of what you do. And Help where you answer the most ask questions about your topics.
We wil devise a plan and tasks to help you produce regular or semi regular content.
Marketing
If we want to grow our channels, we need to get better at this one. We will create a strategy for getting the word our about our content. This could be through social media or collabs.
Simplified Example
Skills
Color Correction
Watch these 2 videos on color correction
Use color correction on next video
Audio
Read X post and watch Y video about compression
Use compression on next video
Content
Create 1 Hero video in next 6 months
Create 1 Hub video every other week
Create 1 Help video every month
Marketing
Post in a related Reddit
Find two hashtags relevant to my content
Pick one social media platform and post to it on a regular basis
We would come up with a strategy for each of these things together and make sure we accomplish them as best we can. I want to know if anyone is interested in doing this before I put a bunch of effort into setting up a system for us to use. Let me know via Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit, or Slack.
We will discuss new features on YouTube, tips and tricks we've recently learned, and general news. We will also talk about panels, expectations, tips, and ge...
