FULL TRANSCRIPT: X user @/Ollie_XVX writes in three successive posts from 1045 - 1108; the updated posts were from 4pm later in the day, timestamps included: 1045: "IOWA CITY: A pro Palestine encampment at University Of Iowa launched at 7am, with around 25 campers and 20 tents. At 730am UIPD came and said campers has 30minutes to disperse, 15 minutes later the cops moved in on the protest and tore down tents with people in them."

Attached to the first post is a photo of the torn down encampment, with at least two officers in the background and one in the foreground. The thread continues:

1053: "One anonymous Protestor said a UIPD officer tried to dive into their tent and in the process dropped a full magazine of 9mm ammo on the ground. They say cops attempted to grab protestors, but all protestors were able to disperse."

the Columbia University arrests are worse than they seem. They're arresting protesting students for trespassing. It goes without saying students cannot meaningfully "trespass" in the common areas of a university they attend. So Columbia University has suspended all student protestors from their institution, in the process revoking their access to housing, their belonging, and most crucially damaging their academic futures. We are witnessing full scale silencing and removal of anyone of conscience from the next generation of academia.

beyond that the columbia common is literally an open space during the day; the gates are open and it's possible to pass through it like you'd pass through a regular block. even after my student ID expired i was still able to walk through the commons bc ID is not requested until you enter an actual building. it's quite common to see parents, toddlers, and such who are clearly not enrolled just hanging out. so not only were the students not trespassing at a SCHOOL THEY PAY FOR, there was also not a precedent for non-students to be disallowed from the grass and walkways.

Because it’s happened to us on a trek, if you see abandoned clothes, stop and search for anyone nearby. Late-stage hypotherima causes a thing called paradoxical undressing where the person feels too hot and starts taking their clothes off.

for a little bit of an order for this if it isn’t obvious: Take any wet clothes off (including sweaty clothes!! underlayers can become soaked with sweat while working in the cold and lead to hypothermia later) BEFORE you wrap the person in warm dry blankets/clothing.

Also I cannot stress the ‘do not rub’ thing enough. If you have a frozen steak, let it thaw a little bit and then give it a good rub. Take a peek at it via a hand lens. You’ll see tons of little cuts/gashes. That’s from the ice crystals cutting into the flesh. NEVER rub the skin of a hypothermia/extreme cold exposed person to warm them up unless you want the same damn thing happening to their flesh.

Don’t warm the extremities (hands/feet) too quickly. Not only would it be extremely painful, but the vessels in said extremities opening too quickly can lead to shock (part of the direct heat issue).

As someone who has treated hypothermia before, yall should also be prepared for the possibility of hallucinations and uncooperative behaviour. Someone who thinks they’re boiling WILL push back against drinking warm water or being kept under blankets.

They will also have a difficult time distinguishing between BURNING HOT and ROOM TEMP so try to keep them from touching anything dangerous, like an oven or wood stove.

They may think you’re smothering or drowning them or believe they are somewhere else with other people. This can be distressing to see as a first responder who isn’t expecting it, but best you can do is stay calm and have EMS on the line.

(Not a medical professional, just a northerner, learned this growing up and used it a couple times.)
