Many of you may or may not have already heard of the Zika Virus through social media outlets or the news. While it is not a new virus, it has recently spread to more than 20 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America -having affected millions of people in Brazil alone.

Just a couple of things to note: - This virus can commonly be transmitted via mosquitoes -specifically, Aedes mosquitoes AND uncommonly transmitted via saliva and semen. - Anyone who is living in/ traveling to an area where Zika virus is found who has not already been infected with the virus is at risk for infection, including pregnant women. - The virus has been linked to causing Microcephaly, which is a serious birth defect in infants where a baby's head is comparatively smaller than expected. - The symptoms of the virus include: fever, rash, joint pain and muscle pain, and 4 in 5 people infected never get sick. - It is most commonly misdiagnosed as dengue, chikungunya or other viral infections causing fever and rash. - There is currently NO vaccine or medication to treat the virus. - Government and health officials are advocating mosquito bite prevention methods as one of the ONLY ways of preventing the spread of the virus.

There have been threats of the Zika virus spreading into southern US, however, the possibility of it spreading into Canada is "low, as mosquitoes known to transmit the virus are not established in Canada and are not well-suited to our climate."

Though this may seem reassuring, it is not virus proof! If anyone is planning to travel down to South America, the Caribbean or even southern US, make sure to take precautionary measures. It's better to be safe than sorry!
