She wasn’t expecting to be addressed by Wanda Maximoff herself, the Scarlet Witch. Like several others here at the Institute, she had been fascinated by the stories of heroes and mutants. To see just one of them in person had many of the children ecstatic. Laura knew better than to encourage that hope of finding a connection between her and someone with such prestige. In a way, she felt rather undeserving of any sort of positive attention.

She couldn’t meet the woman’s eyes, staring off at the laces of her shoes instead. The gentle approach was not new; unexpected perhaps. Her troubles were not entirely with the other students here. She shakes her head slowly, figuring she might as well give Wanda something for trying. How is she supposed to explain an overwhelming sensation of loss now that Logan wanted nothing to do with her? He promised he would never let anything happen to her here, yet this morning he had one foot out the door saying she was better off without him. It was simple: 

“ i don’t need to be here. ”
