Kingsley strode through Diagon Alley a couple days after the disastrous Lestrange fundraiser (and the not so comforting events that surrounded their interrogation of Ted Tonks). As an Auror, he was asked to head an investigation into the events at the manor, which was equal parts amusing and annoying, and as an Order member, Kingsley’s main thoughts and priorities were elsewhere. It was a McKinnon who had killed James Potter. He was fairly confident now that it wasn’t Marlene or Sebastian, which left Alexander or his parents.
Kingsley didn’t know the McKinnons well, but it struck him as shocking that Alexander would have been the one -- he had always seemed so tame. From the way Kingsley had watched Alexander and his father interact, it seemed that the oldest McKinnon sibling didn’t do anything unless his father told him to. But maybe Alexander Sr. was a Death Eater and dragged his son along with him? It was a possibility. In fact, it was the only possibility that made any sense, now that Marlene and Sebastian could be counted out.
Kingsley was so wrapped up in his thoughts that he didn’t see the wizard who was coming out of the door of Florean Fortescue’s, where Kingsley was currently passing. Knocking headfirst into the man, Kingsley nearly knocked them both to the floor, and he reached out a hand to steady them both before taking stock of who he had just literally run into.
“Regulus! Sorry, mate.” Kingsley knew Regulus through his brother and his relationship with Helena. He knew that Regulus had to play neutral for the sake of not blowing Helena’s cover, but Kingsley also knew that Regulus helped the Order as much as he could, so the two had crossed paths many times before now. “I should have been watching where I was going more carefully.”
