Äpler macrone: I had so much fun doing virtual cooking with a friend in Switzerland. At our last cooking session I had shared a recipe for us to cook, so today was her turn to share a favourite Swiss recipe. She picked the recipe ahead of time so that we could purchase all the ingredients and have them ready to cook simultaneously over Zoom. Our time zones lined up well since it was her lunch time and my supper time.
She told me how the Swiss dish we prepared originates from those who spend their summers in the Alps. It's a dish that combines popular ingredients like potatoes, pasta and cheese.
My friend shared a personal touch that she likes to slice the onions into rings, gently caramelize them and arrange them nicely on top of the dish before finishing it off in the oven. So we did just that. The more unique element of this dish is that it is served with a side of apple sauce.
After taking out our dishes from the oven at the same time, we dished up our meal and sat down to eat together. But before we tucked into our first bite she taught me to say, "En guäte", which means "Bon appétit" in Swiss German.
We had such a lovely conversation that it felt like we were in the same room together. Can't wait to cook with her in person one day soon.
