caleb had been itching to get out of the hospital anyways, so when poppy wasn’t present in the hallway outside danny’s room, he volunteered to go find her. the walk to their house wasn’t so far, anyways. it was almost empty, with everyone but poppy at the hospital, dealing with doctors and social workers and danny. all this meant to caleb was a little peace and quiet, and that he could climb in through the living room window, and not the kitchen one. he propped himself up on a pile of bricks and pulled himself through, wandering through the dingy living room to the bedroom the kids shared. he tried the knob- locked. “poppy?” he asked, knocking on the door. “lemme in, poppy. ‘s just me.” he pressed his ear against the wood, listening for her voice.
