Austin Lowery was the youngest of three children. Olivia was the oldest at twenty and acted like a second mother to him. Stephen was seventeen, the middle child and was completely idolized by his younger brother. Their bond was unconventional and what others would consider unhealthy had they known what was going on. With their mother and father working and Olivia off at uni, soon all Austin had was his big brother. It started off with Stephen ordering him around, yet throwing in little head rubs and brief smiles to make it seem friendly.
The younger boy would jump to make the other happy, too innocent to see through to his brother’s true intentions. While all he wanted was to be as cool as his sibling, Stephen looked down at Austin like a pet and nothing more. It took until he was seven to realize something wasn’t quite right. One day when he convinced their parents to get Stephen to teach him to ride a bike, Austin wasn’t prepared for his brother to let go. Since he had been practicing for the first time without training wheels, he was wobbly while sent soaring down a hill. It didn’t matter how long he lasted on the bike because the end result was a x-rays and a cast for his right arm.
Stephen halfheartedly apologized to their folks, but…not to him. That was when he took notice of the smirks and cold stares; something sinister laid in the depths of his brother. The more Austin noticed and tried to talk about it, the more Stephen became threatening. The young boy no longer wanted to play with his brother; however, he was forced into games of chase and hide and seek, the consequence of being caught was a rough round of playfighting. No one believed that Stephen was being anything other than a typical big brother. The only one who could put a temporary stop to it was Olivia when she visited; she disliked the fighting and noticed the way it affected Austin. The youngest Lowery sibling attempted to play the torment off cooly at first because he truly does love his brother, but as his fear grew so did his pleas for anyone to help.
The reason he was sent to Michaelson’s was because, after the hospital treatments and therapist sit downs, it was deemed the most suitable idea. The young boy had developed PTS*D and N*ight Terrors. The cause was Stephen showing his true colors; while Olivia was home for the weekend, Austin woke to the sound of screams and his big sister ushering him out of bed. The smell of gasoline made him cough and slip as they ran. They didn’t get to safety though. Olivia held off their brother long enough to tell Austin to run, which he did. The flames were already on their way to consume the house. With the only staircase ablaze, he hid under his parent’s bed and focused on breathing. As much as he wished he could forget losing his family that night, the marks on his body won’t ever let him. The firefighters arrived in time before his brother could do any further damage with the kitchen knife. After getting them out of the house and Stephen contained from doing any more crime, Austin never saw his brother again. He became a ward of the state and was placed luckily at Michaelson’s after it had been cleansed of the supernatural, though the year he spent there had been filled with stories of demons, angels, and ghosts. He was still residing in the establishment when he fainted and woke in the castle.
