why the Creature and the Bride are not a love story
k i gotta say smth. i really hate the rebranding of the Bride in del Toro's Frankenstein as someone who was willingly in love with the Creature. that appears to be what most people are getting on the surface level.
However, in the context of the movie where the reengineered character of Elizabeth loves the creature (in whatever manner) and then dies for that love, and then is presumably resurrected against her will to live an eternally damned life for the sole purpose of being the Creature's companion?
essentially making the Creature become Victor? essentially asserting no man (profane or divine) is excused from the selfishness of man? proving that Elizabeth/the Bride (women) truly has no place in this world so long as men mold it? proving she is no more than a butterfly in a cage to them? no matter how beautiful, how witty, how intelligent or marvelous?
that she was right? that she is to be granted no freedom in any world, living or dead? and it was her only hope, The Creature, who proved correct her darkest prediction about humanity. he betrayed her.
now that's horror, baby
also don't forget in the original movie she is grown WITH AN ARTIFICIAL (conditioned, brainwashed, 'submissive') brain!
'Shall each man,' cried he, 'find a wife for his bosom, and each beast have his mate, and I be alone?'
also don't forget she doesn't even have a name. The Creature, at the very least, is deemed the first of his kind. Holds the terrible yet powerful title of Creature. she is merely... the Bride. Property.
and that's why she screamed in terror at the Creature's face (Victor's face) and despised him, herself, and kills herself
