The Ride: Burning Desire #1
The Ride: Burning Desire #1 12-Gauge-Image Comics 2019 Written by Doug Wagner Illustrated by Daniel Hillyard & Adam Hughes Coloured by Laura Martin & Adam Hughes Lettered by Ed Dukeshire THE RIDE celebrates its 15th anniversary with a five-part story from the award-winning team of PLASTIC, plus a special backup feature from ADAM HUGHES! After serving a hard 15 years in prison on a murder plea, former Atlanta P.D. detective Samantha Vega now makes her living as a bouncer at an exotic dance club. But life on the outside isn't easy, especially when enemies have scores to settle… Well now isn’t this such a nice surprise! I’d forgotten all about this book, I have several in my collection, so when I realised that 12-Gauge and Image were working together to put this out now I got excited. So the way this opens is great we get a good look at Vega where she’s at now and what she’s doing since being released from prison. I want to thank Doug for this because the place she’s working as a bouncer yeah that’s the kind of joint I would love to work at, but not as a dancer but bartender or something so I could see all the freaky happening. I love the way this is being told, the way this structured so that the pacing is utilised to it’s fullest as we get to learn new information and the revelations that occur. On a personal level I really wanna see more of the little guy in his gold thong and the guy in the puppy mask since after his little demonstration it’s clear there’s more to him than meets the eye. Oh boy Sid and Nance they have me hootin and hollerin all the time we see them. This leads me to the quality and level of characterisation that Doug brings to this book. The fact that everyone we meet and see is fleshed out as well as they are through their actions, reactions and dialogue make this so much damn fun to read. Daniel’s work on the interiors is utterly marvellous to see. The creativity, imagination and representation of so many weird fetish types is just literally brilliant. The linework is so on point as we see the varying weights utilised to create this really good, strong attention to detail. The way that the panels are composed and how we see the backgrounds in them with the utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective being utilised show off this amazing eye for storytelling. The colour work is great as well. I love the bright technicolour of the club compared to the muted tones in the station are done extremely well. The way we see the story & plot development here is wonderfully done and works so in sync with pacing and the characterisation. Everything about this issue is something piques the curiosity and the imagination of the reader. With each new page you never know what’s going to happen or what is going to drag her back to her old life. Which old life is that is up in the air but there’s really only way to go and I can’t wait to see it come. This back-up story is brutal, and I mean fucking brutal. Pardon my French but it had to be said this way. This is beyond anything I could have thought I would see. Granted that good ole boys club and that shed take things to a new level and the sheer inventiveness and cajones on Kiri is completely admirable. This is where Adam shines because this isn’t easy to bring to life and his style and panache here is well worth the price of admission. It’s a horrid reality and a powerful moment in the lives of these two sisters. This isn't for the weak or feint of heart, mature readers a must! This issue demonstrates why I love 12-Gauge and the books they were putting out. Now that they are working with Image here’s hoping we are going to be seeing a lot more of their work hitting shelves because this is what we’ve been missing in the industry, hard hitting, no pulling punches straight up balls to the wall storytelling.
