Avevamo parlato con l’ex One Direction il giorno prima della terribile notizia della morte della sorella, in occasione del lancio di «Two of us», il suo nuovo singolo dedicato alla scomparsa della mamma

Lo avevamo sentito al telefono due giorni fa, in occasione del lancio di Two of us, il brano dedicato alla mamma scomparsa due anni fa, a soli 43 anni, per colpa di una leucemia. Una canzone piena di dolore, ma anche speranza. Di perdita e allo stesso tempo di presenza, perché in fondo quando perdi qualcuno, non se ne andrà mai per sempre. Lo avevamo sentito sereno, anzi, entusiasta, per una canzone così importante nata da un dolore immenso. Oggi la notizia della morte della sorella Felicité, 18 anni. Un infarto. Si rimane senza parole, si pensa a questi due anni difficili così difficili per lui, che però proprio nella musica e nel supporto di tutte le persone che lo seguono da sempre, da quel 2010 in cui a X Factor UK nacquero i One Direction, ha trovato la forza per andare avanti. Riuscendoci. Investendo pensieri e energie nelle sue canzoni, da Just Hold On con Steve Aoki e Back To Youcon Bebe Rexha, fino a questa ballad dolce e piena di malinconia in cui si mette a nudo con i sentimenti, molto di più di quanto riesca a farlo a voce. Un album in arrivo, la tv, il ritorno a X Factor Uk nel ruolo di giudice, i ricordi della band e la possibile reunion. Avevamo parlato di tutto con lui, tra i sorrisi di una ripartenza. E oggi qui riportiamo l’intervista, nel giorno di una perdita lacerante che rimetterà in discussione tutto. Quando è nata Two of Us? «Ho scritto la canzone cinque o sei mesi fa. Era qualcosa che sapevo di voler scrivere, ho avuto il bisogno di scriverla. Quasi fosse una necessità. È qualcosa che mi è nato da dentro, ne sono stato travolto. E proprio per questo la canzone suona così personale, ha così tanto di me. Sono molto orgoglioso di averla scritto e conto che possa arrivare alle persone». Scrivere l’ha aiutata a superare il dolore? «Condividere le mie emozioni mi ha aiutato. Sono riuscito a esternare, a parlare di questa perdita. Mi è stato utile. Pensa che la canzone possa aiutare anche chi la ascolterà? «Penso di sì, normalmente le persone non vogliono parlare di questo tipo di argomento. Cantare queste parole invece mi ha dato sollievo, in questo periodo difficile. Quindi spero, penso, aiuterà molti. Quando ti senti giù per qualsiasi cosa, ascolti musica e il potere delle parole può aiutarti. Chiaramente se è una canzone a in cui ti puoi immedesimare, può aiutare anche a togliere la ferita, a ricucire lo strappo. Sì, la musica aiuta a guarire». Two of us anticipa il suo primo album annunciato ormai da tempo, ma ancora senza data. Quando uscirà? «Sto scrivendo da tanto, continuo a farlo. Sento la responsabilità di questo lavoro e voglio essere sicuro di fare qualcosa di cui andare fiero. Voglio che le canzoni siano tutte “buone abbastanza”, il giorno in cui deciderò di farlo uscire. Sono super attento ai dettagli, so il suono che voglio, le parole che voglio. Ma quando sarà fuori vorrò guardarlo con piena soddisfazione, per ogni singolo momento. Voglio che sia un grande album». Sta ascoltando qualcosa in questo periodo che influenza la sua scrittura? «Guardo con attenzione, per come scrive le canzoni, Alex Turner degli Arctic Monkeys. Mi piace molto. Ho scritto anche in passato, per i One Direction, ma ora sto cercando di trovare il mio stile personale. Più onesto, più intimo. E ci sto riuscendo, credo. La risentiamo dopo tre anni di grandi cambiamenti, alcuni positivi, altri dolorosi. Che bilancio fa? «Sono stati anni di grande cambiamento, con momenti davvero molto difficili. Ma sono stato costantemente motivato dalla mia musica. Se guardo indietro sono fiero di me, di tutto quello che ho fatto da solo e di quello che ho fatto con la band. E non potrò mai ringraziare abbastanza la mia fan base che mi supporta enormemente». Le manca la band? «Certo, mi manca tantissimo. Come a tutti quelli che hanno fatto parte di quel periodo. Abbiamo vissuto sulle montagne russe ed è stato meraviglioso. Abbiamo girato il mondo. Siamo saliti su tutti i palchi. Mi manca e quando ci ripenso sento solo orgoglio». Ha modo di parlare o incontrare gli altri? Vi siete visti recentemente? «Ho rivisto Liam a X Factor, è venuto in una puntata come giudice ospite. Abbiamo parlato molto, è stato bello. Poi sono andato a vedere Niall in tour. La verità è che non riusciamo a sentirci o vederci molto, ma abbiamo un legame unico, non comune. Siamo diventati così famosi da così giovani. È una connessione che durerà tutta la vita, non si può rompere». Tornare a X Factor, il luogo da cui tutto è partito, nel ruolo di giudice che effetto le ha fatto? «È stato fantastico, mi è piaciuto lavorare con la mia categoria. E vedere crescere gli artisti, un esperienza davvero incredibile. Quando Dalton Harris, il ragazzo della mia categoria, ha vinto è stato bellissimo. E anche un sollievo. È giovanissimo, bravissimo e speravo che ottenesse quello che desiderava. È successo». L’anno prossimo festeggerete i primi dieci anni di One Direction. Dobbiamo aspettarci qualche sorpresa? «Non abbiamo ancora iniziato a parlarne, ma la verità è che sarebbe sbagliato non riunirci neanche un giorno, sarebbe sbagliato anche per i fan. Il problema è dire quando. Siamo tutti impegnati nelle nostre carriere». Nella sua, quale obiettivo si è posto? «Voglio fare la mia musica, fare uscire il mio album il prima possibile. Questo è il mio unico obiettivo». E a livello personale? Non è una domanda facile, ma sicuramente vorrei poter essere una persona su cui contare per tutte le persone che mi circondano. Essere un supporto per loro, che possano parlare con me. Chiedermi consigli». Tornerà in Italia? I fan italiani la aspettano. «È difficile trovare le parole giuste per far ringraziare davvero chi mi supporta. Io amo l’Italia, è uno dei primi paesi che ci ha da subito dimostrato un grande affetto. Ogni volta che siamo venuti da voi siamo sempre stati benissimo. Ringrazio per il supporto, ma soprattutto per la pazienza. Quando sarò in tour verro sicuramente in Italia».

We had talked with Louis on the phone two days ago, in occasion of the launch of Two Of Us, the song dedicated to his mum’s passing two years ago, when she was just 43 years old, due to leukaemia. A song full of pain, but also hope. Of loss but also presence, because at the end of the day when you lose someone, they will never actually leave. We had heard him cheerful, even enthusiastic, about his important song born from such an immense pain. Today, the news of his sister’s Félicité’s death, 18 years old. A heart attack. We are left speechless, we think about the last two difficult years for Louis, who, though, had found strength to go on thank you to music and the support of the people who have been following forever, since 2010 on the X factor UK where One Direction was born. And today we report here his interview, on the day of an atrocious loss that will put everything into question. INT: ‘When was Two Of Us born?’ Louis: I wrote the song five or six months ago. It was something that I knew I wanted to write, I needed to write it. It was almost a necessity. It was something that was born within me, and left me overwhelmed. And that’s exactly why this song sounds so personal, there’s so much in it that’s mine. I am very proud of having written it and I hope it can reach people.’ INT: Did writing this song help you get over the pain? Louis: Sharing my feelings has helped me. I was able to disclose [my feelings], to talk about this loss. It was useful to me. INT: Do you think this song could help those who will listen to it? Louis: I think so, usually people don’t want to talk about this topic. Singing these lyrics has given me comfort, in this difficult time. So I hope, I think, it will help many. When you feel down for any reason, you listen to music and the power of lyrics can help you. Clearly if it’s a song you can identify yourself with, it can help to heal your grief, to stitch the wound. Yes, music can heal. INT: Two Of Us anticipates your first album that was announced a long time ago, but that still has no date. When will it come out? Louis: I have been writing for a long time, and I keep doing it. I feel the responsibility of this job and I want to make sure I am doing something to be proud of. I want all the songs to be ‘good enough’ the day I will decide to release them. I pay a lot of attention to details, I know what sound and lyrics I am looking for. But when it [the album] will come out I want to look at it full of satisfaction, for each and every thing. I want it to be a great album. INT: Are you listening to any music right now that is influencing your songwriting? Louis: I pay a lot of attention to Alex Turner’s, from Arctic Monkeys, songwriting style. I like it a lot. I used to write in the past, too, for One Direction, but now I am trying to find my own personal style. More honest, more intimate. And I am succeeding, I think. INT: We are hearing from you again after three years of big changes, some positive, some painful. What balance do you make out of the two? Louis: It’s been three years of big changes, with some very difficult moments. But I have been constantly motivated from my music. If I look back I am proud of myself, of everything I have done on my own and with the band. And I will never be able to say thank you enough to my fan base who supports me greatly. INT: Do you miss the band? Louis: Of course, I miss it a lot. Just like anyone who was part of that period [of our lives]. We have lived on rollercoasters and it was amazing. We travelled the road. We have performed on every stage. I miss it and when I think back about it I only feel proud. Int: Do you ever talk or see the other [members]? Have you seen each other recently? Louis: I saw Liam on the XFactor recently, he came on as a guest judge for an episode. We talked a lot, it was very nice. Then I went to see Niall on tour. The truth is that we can’t talk or see each other often, but we have a unique relationship, not a usual one. We have become so famous so young. It’s a connection that will last for the rest of our loves, it cannot be broken.’ INT: How did it feel to go back on the X Factor in the role of a judge? Louis: It was amazing, I liked working with my category. And seeing the artists grow up, it was a great experience. When Dalton Harris, a guy in my category, won it was amazing. And also a relief. He is very young, very talented and I hoped he’d get what he wanted. And it did happen. INT: Next year it will be the tenth anniversary of One Direction. Should we expect any surprise? Louis: We haven’t started talking about it, but the truth is that it would be wrong not to reunite one day, for the fans, too. The issue is to say when. We are all very busy with our careers. INT: In yours [career] what is your main aim? Louis: I want to do my own music, get my album out as soon as possible. That’s my only objective. INT: And on a personal level? Louis: It’s not an easy question, but I would surely like to be the kind of person everyone who surrounds me can rely on. To be a support for them, so they can talk to me. Ask me for advice. INT: Will you come back to Italy? The fans are waiting Louis: It’s difficult to find the words to truly thank those who support me. I love Italy, it’s one of the first countries who immediately showed us a lot of love. Every time we have come here you have always treated us really well. I am thankful for the support, but especially for your patience. When I will tour I will surely come to Italy.'
