HEATED RIVALRY ⏤ 1x02 -> 1x05
Don’t think too hard about the fact Ilya still had to get through an entire game that had literally just started after Shane was taken off the ice on a stretcher. Ilya had to figure out in that exact moment if he says fuck it to everything and jumps in the back of that ambulance too or hope to god Shane is all right enough that continuing to hold up the rivalry lie isn’t the worst mistake of ilya’s life. Like. Do you think Ilya was fully disassociated throughout the rest of the game? They never tell us who actually won and obviously the metros would have been absolutely rattled but also out for blood after seeing their captain taken out, so I feel like they probably pulled out the win. But. There had to be an effect from Ilya just -not being present- on the ice for the rest of the match. Not present with his own team, not present at faceoffs, just fully skating on autopilot, too terrified to breathe wrong let alone captain his team to victory.
Typically, he’d have been trying to boost morale at intermission but there’s no way he’s doing anything in that locker room but grabbing his phone only to realize he has no one to call to ask for an update. He can’t call the hospital, he can’t call Shane, how would he even get in contact with Shane’s parents?? Realizing the only thing his phone can do is refresh the news outlets probably shattered something in ilya. Do you think they pulled him off the line after a bit because he was so zoned out? Do you think marley tried to say something about his screw up that Ilya didn’t even acknowledge because he genuinely couldn’t hear a thing being said to him? Do you think he was holding onto his mom’s cross every minute he was on the bench?
Do you think late that night in his hotel room espn was playing live on a loop in case they got breaking news faster than the internet and he heard through a fog the commentators discussing the game like, “rozanov had no fire out there tonight and with that kind of apathy, im not surprised to see the metros take the win, even with their captain missing. no update from the metros on Hollander yet, our thoughts, of course, still with him.” Then Ilya fitfully falling asleep when his eyelids could physically no longer stay open, his alarm ringing only a couple hours later so that he could get up and get to the hospital right when visiting hours started. Do you think he realized that he hadn’t taken a full breath until Shane called him to his beside and grabbed onto his hand.
