Let’s Talk About Pokemon - Deoxys
386: Deoxys
While the Legendaries of this Gen have been cool but still not the most fun things to talk about, I think just about any fan of Gen 3 would like to point out the awesomeness that is Deoxys. Deoxys is just about on-par for Mewtwo when it comes to generally cool and weird Psychic-type Legendary Pokemon. Hell, I'd say Deoxys is even cooler than Mewtwo is, personally! This thing is a space alien! That evolved from a virus! Hence its tentacle arms forming a helix shape like DNA strands. Fitting, for the “DNA Pokemon!”
Attack Form:
Deoxys comes with a gimmick that came before half the friggin Legendary Pokemon came with alternate forms. But Deoxys is capable of doing some minor shape-shifting, each form changing its stats drastically. While it's not directly having to do with it being a hyper-evolved virus, it does at least give it an implication that it's able to swiftly adapt its body to any extreme situation that calls for changing the entire structure of its body. Attack Deoxys here is, as you'd expect, is pointier and more aggressive looking.
Defense Form:
Defense Deoxys broadens all of its features, developing near-indestructible Defense stats in the process. And a cool tie-in with the alien theme is that this form even resembles an astronaut suit. That's neat!
Speed Form:
Gah! Deoxys, put your clothes back on!
Yes, Speed Deoxys, does indeed look like it's generally streamlined itself down to the basic shapes (barring a weirdly shaped head) in order to move faster. It’s sadly just slightly more normal looking than all the other forms, mostly because it has only two arms instead of the four each of the other forms has. I'm not sure which of these I'd call my favorite, I just kinda like all of them equally as a whole.
Deoxys definitely looks bizarre and alien, and that's precisely what's so cool about it. A freakish, monstrous outsider that happens to be capturable like all these other Pocket Monsters. What the heck are you Deoxys! While it may not appear completely alien; I'd still argue the Ultra Beasts, or at that, even the Regis are a tier above Deoxys in terms of alien-looking abstract monsters, but Deoxys here still sells itself a-plenty as an unnervingly humanoid creature with a pretty sinister presence to it.
But to add to its weirdness, there’s a little lore detail about that crystal in its chest being the “true” Deoxys. Or at least the crystal is its brain, while the rest of its body is just a formation around its chest-brain-thing.
Personal Score: 9.5/10
There's the occasional Legendary that's more like a cryptid than a thing of ancient legend, and I notice with Pokemon like Deoxys, that's just about a free pass into my book. And Deoxys just excels even higher above that. It's so cool!
...And that's Gen 3 finally done! It's time, once again, for our Generation recap after a brief break.
