Burgundy: ever ridden a motorcycle?
Yes! Not as the driver, but I had an interest in motorcycles from age about 13 and parents were really smart about it because they allowed me to ride with a family friend and another time with a relative so long as I wore proper gear. Much like their approach to body mods they steered me well in that way, instead of banning things they treated me maturely and it paid off because I got really aware of the importance (and aesthetic) of protective gear and handling a motorbike properly. It meant that my desire to own a motorbike one day evolved from “as soon as I’m 17, instead of a car” into “a bit later, when I am in a situation where I can get a decent bike and really enjoy it.”
With body mods, they were really fair with allowing me to have piercings, which meant I listened when they said to take my time until I got any tattoos because I couldn’t change them in the same way. All my friends whose parents took a hardline on both, meanwhile, were going to a dodgy tattoo place in Camden Town that didn’t age check by the time they were 17, and getting tattoos without really thinking if they’d still like the same teenage stuff in even a few years. (And I know several people who have had either laser or a cover-up before age 25.)
