Sebastian stares at the girl across from him, twisting his gloves under the table as she stares back, eyes huge and unblinking. He thinks they might be having a staring contest. He thinks he might have already lost several times.
When Kay called him and said, “Heyo! We’ve got a job today!” he hadn’t asked any questions because it was Kay, and he didn’t have anything else going on. Now, sitting across from an eight-year-old—“Almost nine,” Trucy had said when Kay introduced them—in some random diner, Sebastian really wishes he had at least asked Kay where they were going.
Kay, who has abandoned them to order food. Kay, who ruffled Trucy’s hair and promised she already knew what Sebastian would want off the menu. Kay, who is taking her sweet time.
