Three Immortal Lessons
From all of history we draw our lessons... the everlasting come from our beacons/ Lessons die off at their own expense... except when Hussain, Sajjad, and Abbas are in their defense/
***
Examine Hussain spiritually or historically, your heart melts in his direction/ When he was born into this world of creation, what didn’t happen/ Everything peeked over, even the sun turned around to meet its competition/ All of creation knew Hussain is going to be worth meeting on this exact occasion/ Nothing in these lands would miss the opportunity to meet Muhammad’s own reflection/ But how many things would kiss his neck on this day to show their appreciation/
His very birth was a gift, a blessing that brought afloat millions of lessons/ And how many do I adore when my firmness of faith, Hussain alone fashions/ I climb up over the ego inside so my eyes, Hussain’s humility, envisions/ The flowers of potential in me cry for Hussain to water these lushes of gardens/ Each drop is a lesson, and its not a personal gift, but for the billions/ His birth was not just one day or one blessing, but a centerfold for all ascensions/
***
In looking for my next virtue and lesson, I look to Abbas as history’s teacher/ Abbas’s birth wasn’t limited to only bring Hussain good wishes, but also to every other/ When he was born, his mother kisses his arms, “he is born a servant” she’d whisper/ As a strong leader he stands, look at his level of servitude-his greatest feature/ Serving is not demeaning, just look at how many of us learn from his gesture/ He serves everything he has completely and this is what makes him a leader/
His birth was a spark to the life he led and I don’t know which is more weighty/ The future of my faith, I’ve placed in his hands though they were taken forcefully/ Because I know he’d still find a plan of action for any lover of God excitedly/ He is full of power and has never died, though his body lies brokenly/ Not a warrior, this is the warrior of Hussain’s battle as he fought brilliantly/ Let history and all collapse, it would still be Abbas’s lessons that stand defiantly/
***
For the lessons I exhume from words, I thank Imam Zain ul-Abideen/ The wielder of words, as these supplications help keep my heart clean/ His lessons build my hopes and faith for all that is a part of the world unseen/ How precious do I hold him dear who gave me the directions on how to be serene/ Practicing his lessons of patience in prayer have become a part of our routine/ And I wonder if he is proud or in dismay when he is looking at this scene/
His birth is applauded by the words and letters he had written/ We should attempt to fall in love with his writings, at least a fraction/ He has lessons in these words that most will try to keep hidden/ Because his words are the seeds to your insight and shouldn’t go without mention/ Let him open your eyes to the sights they should see with no aversion/ Let Sajjad take your soul on its own journey for lessons till your spirit awakens/

Keep the source of lessons nearby... accept and learn them while your heart they purify.
When They Visit Me
If when my death is here… and my grave doesn’t tighten… know I’ve let loose of my failures Because by God’s Will… deep in what should be a tight space… I will have the greatest visitors
***
I wander around, a traveller… my sins have made this home darker/ I’m to blame for this harm… my devilish acts around me swarm/ I am stuck in pain with no reliever… my pleading has no listener/ There is no one else responsible… I am the one who’s failed this battle/ Here I am, in the world’s reality… trying to reach the best form of purity/ My actions are manifesting… and I shy away from them, crying/ I am disgusted at my own self… what have I allowed to become of myself/ I am dead and forgotten… and only hold the company of each action/
***
But I have a guide here who is of help… told me if I ever need him, to yelp/ Like an outcry on this battlefield… he comes to my torment and has me healed/ He is my companion on this journey… granted to me by God’s infinite Mercy/ I used to win and beat evil sometimes… so I get to reap the good of those pastimes/ This is my companion and he has told me… that he is here due to my love for Ali/ That all the good deeds I have mustered… is because this love was anchored/ While there’re other ways to get relief here… it’s strongest by keeping them near/ Keeping God’s household beloved in that life… is saving me here from most strife/
***
When I feel suffocated in this home… the words of the Qur’an I read will roam/ When I am burdened by my misdeeds… my prayer for me intercedes/ When I feel my flesh burn from my lies… my rosary beads ensure this fire dies/ When my pain is intense… all of the good words I wrote jump in defense/ When I am unable to answer their questions… like who is your Lord and prophets/ I close my eyes and let Hussain remind me… he compels me to answer but just barely/ I am weak and so I am not doing well… but I think there’ll be help soon, I can’t tell/ Surely I am in need and professing it… are my beloveds really going to abandon my spirit/
***
“God’s mercy encompasses all things”… so I plead to Him for any offerings/ Soon my friend came along to my aid… told me that I will have visitors so he stayed/ He helped me ready my grave for their eyes… but I was embarrassed by its size/ My friend assured me it would be no problem… but I was still ashamed to welcome/ We heard a knock on my grave’s door… I sat in the corner frozen to my core/ My friend welcomes them in… out of shyness, I put my head down and spoke within/ Could this really be my beloved in my home… I didn’t even get to visit his dome/ Delight and shame keep me in silence… this is Abbas who is here, Hussain’s essence/
***
He sits with me to comfort my injuries… his presence brings an overwhelming ease/ I am in the comfort of the greatest of comforters… the warmest of Hussain’s soldiers/ He said that he’d be here for me, mounted… for as long as my love for him had lasted/ While in that grave, all of the peace I gathered… came from Abbas as he nurtured/ I was surprised to see him visit me… and just as he did my grave expanded widely/ He brought me relaxation as his gift… just as all of my harm he would alone lift/ Abbas told me that he won’t be the only one… my excitement grew at the notion/ So Abbas leaves me but with hope… and he leaves me with an easier way to cope/
***
I’m alone again but stronger than before… now I wait to see who else comes to my door/ It’s colder now that he is gone… but I won’t give up hope, God’s names I still call upon/ And just before my loneliness got too strong… my friend told me Fatima won’t be too long/ I heard a knock at the door and I got nervous… help is at the door of my crisis/ My grave opens to let Fatima in… without her I don’t know where I would’ve been/ I respected and upheld her during my lifetime… Fatima, anyone’s perfect paradigm/ Fatima lit up the darkness of my household… she wraps and warms all that is cold/ I couldn’t move close to her… she is Kawthar and the prophet’s daughter/
***
But Fatima comes closer to me… she reads Quran here to make me happy/ Fatima tells me she is proud… that my love for her and her family I didn’t shroud/ How can I keep her a secret… when to the door of misery, she could shut/ I am always in desperate need of her… look at what she’s done here to make things better/ I swear my flesh is no longer burning… my body is no longer aching/ My love for her triumphs the evil I had done… my list of sins temporarily go barren/ This way I get to focus on the light before me… Fatima and I converse with even tea/ All praises belong to God for sending me these gifts… nothing gave me more success/
