But what if Steve recognizes Bucky before the mask falls in catws? For Steve, Bucky died not long ago, he still remembers his face vividly, for years he stared at his eyes, tried to capture it’s color perfectly on paintings, traced the contours of his face in paper dozens and dozens of times, could find him in big crowds in seconds. He remembers every detail that there’s to remember, all the colors, textures, sounds and smells, everything that is Bucky, Steve has stored secure in his brain. 

So when he sees the Soldier’s eyes for the first time, his heart stops for a second, and he wonders. But of course he's wrong, he saw Bucky fall, he couldn't have survived, and even if he had, it’s been years already. Steve’s brain is so desperate to find reason to what happened with his life, it searches in the crowds for familiar faces. How many times didn’t Steve saw a glimpse of Peggy’s face in the subway? Or one of the Howling Commandos in the streets? Bucky at every turn he made? Feeling that pang of hope in his heart for a second hurts too much. This is just his brain fooling himself again.

But still, I like to think Steve wondered ‘what if?’, still dreamed about it. Dreamed about not being alone in this whole new world anymore. How he wished. He would pay any price to have Bucky back.

So the mask falls, and Steve realizes his dream turned reality, but it wasn’t he who paid the price, and the price was much greater than he thought.
