Empowerment, Quilt (XL Twin Size):
This quilt was inspired by a small art piece I completed in a retreat workshop given by Jim Smoote the summer of 2016. In the workshop we were able to draw inspiration from many magazine pages and clippings, various drawn symbols and shapes and papers, markers, pencils or many different colors. The major design element of the Harlem Renaissance inspired silhouette was his design. I used it to cut out a vibrant orange head to place on a black background and combined it with magazine pictures and graphics for my workshop piece. The combination of the bright head on the black background kept coming to me as something powerful, it made my head hang higher. For this quilt, I added the Adinkra symbol Woforo Dua Pa A “ When you climb good tree”, the symbol of support, cooperation and encouragement, in chartreuse at the corner. Symbolic mountains, with the plains beyond and a setting sun can be seen in the quilting
