It's been awhile since I created a full color piece (a whole year to be exact), but the crazy is finally dying down and I was able to finally get around to coloring to this lovely creature. My depiction of Aenocyon dirus, the newly re-classified dire wolf. It was discovered that dire wolves were their own canid species (much like the dhole or maned wolves) and not related to wolves at all. Scientists hypothesize that they were likely red in color with larger ears and bushy tails much like "a really large coyote". I decided to go with a hybridization of the dhole, maned wolf, and wolf/coyote pelt and markings. The necklace consists of a megalodon tooth, two American lion fangs, abalone shell, Larimar beads, and green turquoise beads. “Ancient Guardian” Watercolor and colored pencil on 9 X 12 smooth Bristol paper. It's been quite awhile since I worked on a full color piece. A whole year to be precise! Thankfully things have settled and I am back at it again with my interpretation of Aenocyon dirus, the newly reclassified dire wolf. It was discovered that dire wolves were their own canid species wholly separate from wolves. Scientists now propose that, like other canids such as the dhole, and maned wolf, they would have been reddish in color with large-ish ears and bushy tails. So this is my new take on dire wolves. I am giving him/her a reddish coat with black and white points similar to dholes and maned wolves, while trying to keep it looking like its own species.
