Wonder Woman - DoMAYstic day 9
Meet Jennifer 'JJ' Jareau, communications liason for the FBI's behavioral analysis unit. Perks of the job include a private office, a badge to drive off FBI fake-claiming potential suitors with, and – "JJ have you seen my glasses?"
She smiles at the young man, "They're on your nose, Spence."
"Oh," his hand comes up to check, "I'm sorry, I just got started thinking about it, and–"
"It's fine," she smiles again. Smiling is easy in her job, well, easier than it is for the profilers she works with. But honestly, it's exactly those people that give her a lot to smile about.
Her next stop is in Hotch's office, where she is to drop off some paperwork. To get there, she'll have to cross what's known as the bullpen, a rather large room where dozens of agents have a desk. Or, as JJ knows it, a wasteland of misplaced files and personal property. She smiles at the thought as she pushes through the door. Immediately she is greeted by the constant hum of conversation and the clickety-clack of keyboards. She is also immediately approached by agent Elle Greenway, another member of the BAU. "JJ I know I promised you I'd keep better track of it but," Elle sighs in defeat, "I lost my coffee mug again. Have you seen it?"
Pushing her hair behind her ear, JJ considers the question. Her gaze automatically searches the room and she soon finds herself pointing, "Looks like agent Anderson took it. Would you like me to get it back for you?"
Elle rolls her eyes, "No, I got it. Thank you, JJ."
Another smile breaks on her face, "My pleasure." She means it. The small things she can do for the members of her team always make her happy.
Climbing the stairs to Hotch's office, she can hear the man grumbling about something. Then the scraping sound of heavy furniture being forced to relocate, followed by the very distinct noise of a pile of paperwork falling to the floor. This is followed by a short burst of expletives and a deep, dejected sigh.
She knocks while entering, not at all surprised to find agent Hotchner on his knees beside his crooked desk. He is carelessly stacking the papers that are on the floor, checking each one to see if it's the one he's looking for. JJ smiles, because how could she not? "I have the paperwork you left in Garcia's office." The man on the floor freezes, then looks up, a horrified expression on his face. JJ barely manages not to laugh as she elaborates, "The stuff about the new insurance plan?"
He rises faster than Jesus on speed, "Yes! Ahum, thank you very much."
She hands him the manilla envelope, "Not a problem." She smiles again, it feels good to be needed. "Do you need some help with that?"
He returns her smile, shaking his head a little, "I got it. I'm just so relieved to have this back. Thank you JJ, I wouldn't know what to do without you here."
Her smile widens, and she turns to the door, "Rest assured, I have no intention of leaving."
His reply follows her out the door, "Good, you're needed here."
While she's here, JJ decides to check in on Gideon, who has the office next to Hotch. All seems calm as she enters, but JJ immediately knows something is off. It's just something in the way his brow wrinkles, in the almost angry way he snaps off his glasses to look at her, though she knows full well Gideon would never take his bad mood out on her. She cocks her head, "Hey there, I thought I'd drop in."
He nods at her, "Did you get the file on the Texas case yet? I annotated it."
That's Gideon. All work and no play. It makes her smile a little because it's just so him, "I did. I sent it over to Johnson since it's really his department that handles that."
"Oh," he frowns a little, "I'm sorry."
"Not a problem at all. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
He clearly hesitates for a moment before giving in. "I had a book here," his hand touches an empty spot on his desk, "right here. It was right here last night."
She looks at the empty spot, there certainly isn't anything there now. The desk is a barren desert devoid of any and all books. "What kind of book?" She wouldn't even know where to begin looking without knowing that much. But Gideon shakes his head and mutters something about how it doesn't matter. JJ suppresses a sigh, "I'm pretty good at finding things."
He gives her a look, "So am I."
"You find people. I just find books." She thinks for a moment, "And coffee mugs. And glasses. And paperwork that's left in the wrong office – really, it's no big deal. Just tell me which book it is." She smiles at his reluctance to burden her, but stands her ground.
He nods again, "It's called 'The Birds of the Great Plains'. It's a rather large book –"
"With a scissor-tailed flycatcher on the cover, right?" She interrupts, excited that she can help. Gideon pauses at the interruption – or maybe it's because this city girl that probably knows fuck-all about birds knew how to identify the bird on the cover of his book, she doesn't wait to find out, "I think that's the book agent Anderson was reading with his morning coffee. Would you like me to go get it back?"
Gideon's face darkens, "No thank you. I'd like to have a talk with this agent Anderson myself. I think I need to explain to him what the words, 'my office' and 'private property' mean. Would you mind telling me which one he is?"
She smiles at the contained anger in his eyes, "I'll show you to his desk."
With Gideon on her heels, she exits the office. He follows her down the stairs and through the bullpen. JJ can't help but feel a tad sorry for agent Anderson; he's summoned a fire that no ordinary water will be able to put out. She stops a few feet from agent Anderson's desk. She doesn't need to point him out. Gideon moves past her and takes the book out of the younger man's hands, immediately pointing him to the inscription on the first page. JJ simply walks away, not wanting to serve as a lightning rod for Gideon's entirely well-directed anger.
Now on her way back to her own office, where she should hopefully be able to get some work done, she all but bumps into agent Morgan. He looks quite distraught, so she asks him what's up.
"My phone," he says, "Can't find the damn thing anywhere."
Oh, this one is easy! JJ smiles as she pulls out her own phone and quickly searches her contacts. Seconds later there is a buzzing and whirring coming from Morgan's overcrowded desk. JJ steps forward, lifting a stack of files to uncover an angrily buzzing phone, "This phone, you mean?" She chuckles as he swiftly grabs it.
"That phone," he gives her a sheepish smile, "Thanks, JJ."
"Anytime." She returns his smile. To her left, Gideon still leans over Anderson. To her right, Elle is scrubbing her coffee mug. JJ decides to head back to the relative peace of her own office.
The hallway she takes to get to her office leads her past Garcia’s office, from where a constant stream of ‘no, no, no,’ erupts. JJ pauses for a moment before deciding to head in, “Garcia? Is something wrong?”
The woman turns to her, a pained expression on her face as she gestures wildly with her hands, “Very, very wrong! I just can’t find her anywhere!”
Now that she has someone by her side, Garcia manages to calm down a little, “My Wonder Woman figurine. She’s this tall,” she measures about two inches between her fingers, “and she’s standing on a little transparent pedestal. She’s my muse, JJ! I need my Wonder Woman to remind me that I’m a Wonder Woman.”
JJ smiles as she looks around the small room. Bending over, she checks under the desk, then rummages through the small trashbin. “Ah, here we go,” JJ says triumphantly as she holds up the small figurine.
Garcia gasps, walking toward her as if JJ is a goddess to be worshipped – which as far as Garcia is concerned, she totally is. Taking the figurine, Garcia places it in the most sacred of places; right underneath her main monitor. She smiles wide and turns back to JJ, hugging her tight, “Thank you so much, JJ. I didn’t know what I was going to do without you. You are totally a Wonder Woman too, my sweet. You are amazing!”
JJ smiles, very happy to have been of assistance. She hugs back tightly, only reluctantly letting go when Garcia does. The other woman immediately hunches over, scribbling something on a post-it and sticking it to JJ’s shirt before gently shooing her out the door, “Go, my love. I have much work to do! Go treat yourself to a latte.”
Outside Garcia’s office, JJ checks the note the tech analyst stuck to her shirt. She smiles, then carefully peels the note off to stick it to Garcia’s door, just underneath the nameplate. Admiring her addition for a moment, JJ’s smile widens into a genuine grin. Nodding to herself, she hums a happy tune as she walks off, leaving Garcia’s door to speak the truth of what was behind it.
