Drinks were flowing and the liquid courage was slowly beginning to help both Aiden and Grace. The atmosphere was beginning to lighten up a bit.
Aiden had noticed that Grace had a certain sadness to her once they arrived, but he was determined to make it go away. This was their night and she shouldn’t feel anything but amazing. He took a zip of his drink and gestured to Grace that he was gonna visit the toilet and to stay put. She nodded and smiled back at him.
The music was loud in the club and Grace felt like the bass was competing with her heartbeat, for which could beat the loudest. She took a big sip of her drink and watched as two youngsters was grinding on the dancefloor. She chuckled as the girl almost lost her balance and was caught by the boy, she was dancing with. They locked eyes and he pulled the girl closer, before planting a passionate kiss on her lips. Grace felt a little embarrassed, as she realized she was staring. God she missed kissing. She hadn’t kissed anyone since her ex-fiancé had left her. If only Aiden would kiss her like that. She imagined his lips, she could almost feel the soft lips under the prickly stubble. Grace blushed hard and clapped her cheeks with both hands, as if to wake herself from a dream. She grabbed her drink and chucked it down. What was she doing?
Aiden got back from the toilet, he glanced around the club and before heading back to grace at the bar, he went over to the DJ and requested a song. He was determined to lift Grace’s mood and a dance might just be it. He loved when Grace danced, usually she was dancing around in the kitchen with Ethan on her arm in the mornings, thinking that they were all alone and that Aiden still was getting ready for work. There had been many mornings during her stay, where ha had been close to being late for work, as he could stare at the two of them dancing around for hours, if he had the time.
Grace almost jumped of off her chair, when Aiden returned to the bar. she hadn’t noticed him so he took her by surprise. Aiden laughed and put a reassuring hand on her shoulder before leaning in closer to tell her something. Grace gasped after air as his breath reached her ear. For a moment she forgot to both breath and listen.
“What?!” She half shouted, “What’d you say?”
“Wanna dance?” Aiden asked again, Grace looked nervous and began to fiddle with her hair.
“Not really...” She replied “I’m sorry, Aiden, I’m just not juiced enough to shake my booty among all the youngsters” She giggled and shyly tugged a stay hair strand away from her face. Aiden smiled, she was so cute. She was the most beautiful woman in here and had nothing to feel shy about. however, he wouldn’t force her, if she didn’t feel like it.
“Then how about we get some fresh air?” He asked and Grace nodded. He grabbed her hand and together they went outside.
The air was chilly outside. Aiden wondered if he should offer Grace his jacket, but she looked like she enjoyed the chill after being somewhat crammed in the club. Aiden smiled and glanced down at her hand, neatly placed in his. He didn’t let go, instead he squeezed it a bit and dragged her even further away from the club and it’s loud music. The song he had requested was beginning and he spun Grace around, so she ended up in his embrace. Grace was again taken by surprise and she felt her face turning red. She stepped away from Aiden. She shouldn’t get her hopes up.
Aiden didn’t let go of Grace, even though she tried to step away.
“What’s wrong?” He asked and feared the answer. Had he gone too far? Had he ruined everything?
“Aiden...” Grace replied, gazing down on the pavement, “I’m not cut out for this”.
“Cut out for what?” Aiden asked and wondered what she meant.
“This!” She almost shouted. “Aiden... I... We...” She stuttered and tears was staring to form in her eyes. How should she explain without loosing him or his friendship? This was all so confusing and complicated.
“but you are” Aiden replied and Grace sighed. He clearly had no clue what she was trying to say. “Aiden...”
“Grace, I know what you’re trying to say” He continued, before she could finish her sentence. “But you got it wrong. I like you, no... I love you! And I think I’ve loved you since we were children. I was just to stupid to truly notice and thought you way to good for me”,
Grace couldn’t believe what he was saying. “But... Brenna? Your dream of having a family?”
“YOU are my family, Grace, don’t you see?” Aiden reached for her chin and lifted her face so she could see the sincerity in his eyes.
“But...” Grace continued and looked away.
“Grace, it’s you! It has always been you!” Aiden pulled her in closer. “I’ve been so blind, so stupid, so dang idiotic. Forgive me”
“Forgive you?! for what?” Grace asked.
“For not noticing you, for being blind to your feelings”.
Grace looked at Aiden in wonder. What was she going to do now. He was so close and yet seemed so far away.
“Grace... Stay” Her heart skipped a beat. “Stay with me and Ethan” Aiden’s voice was low and even though it was mostly clam, she detected a slight nervousness in it.
“I’m not sure... I mean... I would... but what if... Brenna” Grace muttered and her heart felt like it had taken a dagger to it, from the thought of Aiden leaving her in order to return to Brenna. “She’s Ethan’s mom”.
“She is” Aiden replied and Grace’s felt like crying. Her dream was within reach but was now shattered. Why didn’t she just agree and ignore her inner voice telling her, that she wasn’t strong enough to survive being tossed by Aiden for the mother of his child.
“But she’s not the woman for me, Grace, you are”.
At first she didn’t hear it or if she did, she couldn’t compute. She was about to protest again, but Aiden stopped her.
“Grace, be mine! will you?” He looked terrified.
“I love you! And you alone! Grace.” Aiden continued “It’s true that Brenna is Ethan’s mom and that to some extent we will always be connected through him. But she left, Grace, she left me and Ethan!. You stayed! You were always here, always by my side, always! You were the one to mend my broken heart, when she broke it into pieces. You healed me with your love and cheerful personality. You made me open my eyes to the truth, to the emotional abuse, Brenna put me through. You picked me up and glued me together. I’m grateful for my son, don’t get me wrong. But I wish, It could have been you, Grace. I wish for you to be Ethan’s mom. He loves you and you are already more of a mom, than Brenna ever were. So don’t compare yourself to her. She is nothing compared to you! Grace... I love you, more than life itself and I want you! Not Brenna, not anyone else! I beg you, Grace, please be mine?”
Grace was lost for words, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. In the end she just nodded. Aiden send her the biggest smile she had ever seen on his face and before she could send one back he kissed her. It was even better than what she had dreamt off.
