275 - The Woman in the Window (Patreon Selects)

We're wrapping up our run of Patreon Selects episode with a real doozy! Originally intended for 2019, The Woman in the Window was meant as a prestige adaptation of a popular thriller, packing quite the pedigree. With the attached talents of director Joe Wright, writer Tracy Letts, and star Amy Adams (along with a stellar supporting cast), the film follows an agoraphobic who witnesses a murder across the street, setting off a mystery of mistaken identities and skewed perceptions of reality. Then, it was hit by a rapid succession of misfortunes including the Disney-Fox merger, a cringe-inducing exposé on author A.J. Finn, and, well, the pandemic.

This episode, we talk about what went wrong and what might have been watered down by the Tony Gilroy reshoots. We also discuss Adams' recent run of disappointing roles, our hopes for Nightbitch later this year, and Jennifer Jason Leigh joins our Six Timers Club!

Topics also include the emergence of Fred Hechinger, Julianne Moore's brief boozy performance, and the film's somewhat unceremonious Netflix drop.

I wish I could be forgiven.

The Woman in the Window

WOW, so there were some editing CHOICES made here!

Solidly tense at times, but just not interesting enough to hold that momentum of tension when it needed it most (third act). Some cool visuals reminiscent of I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS. Still laughing at the fact that David just wanted to get his d**** w** and couldn't catch a break this entire film.

Silver Shark

An AJ and Eric Myers what if. What happens when AJ travels with the trio from the academy to train with RJ, and RJ can’t put aside his feelings toward his father?

The first time Eric saw her, she was a blur jumping into the river. The silver guardians had been asked to provide security for some sort of parade-Eric hadn’t really paid much attention to what for. He didn’t expect anything to happen-things had been at peace for a while now. 

But then someone’s kid had gotten too close to the railing, leaned over, and fell in. Eric had heard a yell and whipped his head around, only to find that someone else had jumped in after them. He couldn’t see a sign of either the kid or the girl who’d jumped in after him, so after muttering a curse, he took off his jacket and equipment and jumped in after them.

He dove under the water several times, not seeing anyone or anything. “Dammit!” He cursed to himself. “Stupid kids....” But just as he was about to dive under again, two heads surfaced. Eric swam toward them and grabbed for them both. 

“Take the boy,” the girl told him. “I can swim just fine. I’ll meet you there.” 

“No dice kid, you’re both coming with me,” Eric replied. He put one arm around them both and started swimming to shore. “What the hell were you thinking, anyway?”

“He’s just a kid,” the girl replied. “I was thinking he ought to have a chance at life.” 

Eric pondered that as they got to shore, and handed the boy over to his frantic mother. 

“Mommy, mommy I saw a shark!” The little boy woke up immediately, and started chattering as if nothing happened.

“Of course you did, dear. Did you thank these people?”

“Thank you! And thank Mr. Shark too!” The little boy grinned and waved as his mother ushered him off.

“There are no sharks in there,” Eric muttered as he helped the girl out and followed suit. “Who are you, anyway? You could’ve gotten yourself killed.”

“AJ,” she said. “I wouldn’t have drowned in there. He was right about the shark.”

“Kid, did you swallow too much water? There are no sharks in that river.”

“No, there aren’t, but my animal spirit is a shark. He protected me, and he protected that boy.”

“Sure kid, sure.” 

“I bet you couldn’t see us when you jumped in, could you? We were down pretty far.”

“Okay, you have me, but I still don’t believe-”

“Let me explain a little, okay?” She told him about Pai Zhua and animal spirits as they walked. Eventually they ended up back at Eric’s jeep, where he drove them back to Silver Guardians headquarters. 

He’d then find a change of clothes for her while finding one for himself, and offer her some hot coffee while she finished her story. “Sounds like a bunch of kung fu hocus pocus to me. Or is this like power ranger stuff?”

“Power ranger stuff,” she replied. “Look, everyone has an animal spirit. Mine happens to be a shark. It’s just like my dad’s, and he’s kind of a jerk.” She explained her father’s rigorous training style.  “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind working hard. But I didn’t find out a lot of the whys till I got to the academy, and he never let me do anything else. You try training when you’re sick or hurt?”

“Jeez, kid,” Eric said. But mostly he listened in silence as she went on about the academy, learning more about her abilities, and then what happened with Dai Shi.

“So then we went to this guy RJ’s house and he was supposed to be our new master and stuff. The other three got ranger powers and I didn’t though I didn’t really care about that-but anyway we were supposed to learn about making pizza while training. I have no idea what that had to do with anything, but it was nice to do something else. “Only...”

“Only what?”

“Only RJ never trained me in anything. He hardly talked to me, and just made me do chores that took me away from everyone else. He never explained why, and I got the impression that I didn’t belong. So I took a bus to a random spot, and this is it. I’ve got nowhere to go because no one really wants me. And here we are.”

Eric sat back in his chair, pondering for a minute. He sighed, and said, “Welcome to the Silver Guardians, kid. Consider yourself a trainee.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Finish your coffee, and I’ll find you a room.”

Review: I absolutely loved the complexity of this book. It was engaging and I loved rooting for Anna. I would most definitely recommend this book to whoever would listen. Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not after you.

ps: just found out on google, the writer of "the woman in the window" is like ethan, he killed his mother and brother!!!
