i'm back i think.. i hope this was okay, anon
It was late enough that the city outside had gone quiet — just a few cars humming in the distance, the occasional flicker of headlights slipping through the blinds. Leo’s apartment was dim, a single lamp throwing soft gold light across the room.
You were sitting cross-legged on his couch, a half-eaten bag of chips between you, both of you watching something dumb on TV. The kind of show that didn’t require thinking — just noise and bad jokes.
Leo was leaning back, hoodie sleeves pushed up, his arm resting lazily along the top of the couch. You’d been together long enough that silence wasn’t uncomfortable anymore. Still, he’d glance at you every so often — like he couldn’t quite help it.
At some point, you started talking — not about anything deep, just the small stuff that always came easier at night. About a new café that opened near your place, a stray cat you saw that morning, a random dream that made no sense.
Leo listened the way he always did — quiet, attentive, with that soft focus that made you feel like you were saying something important even when you weren’t.
You laughed halfway through your story, mouth full of chips, and he smiled. The lazy, half-hidden kind that curved the corner of his mouth.
“What?” you said, nudging him with your foot.
“Nothing.”
“Liar.”
He tilted his head, pretending to think. “You get crumbs everywhere.”
“Excuse me?”
“You’re a menace.”
You reached over and flicked his arm, which only made him grin wider. “That’s not even—”
“You are,” he insisted, laughing now. “Look at this.” He gestured dramatically at the couch, which, okay, did have a few crumbs.
“You’re dramatic,” you shot back, grabbing another handful just to prove a point.
“Don’t you dare.”
“Oh, I dare.”
The next thing you knew, you were both laughing — you trying to dodge his hand as he half-heartedly tried to grab the chips away, him trying not to actually hurt you while doing it. It was messy and stupid and perfect.
You both froze mid-laugh when you realized how close you’d ended up. His hand still held your wrist, his breath brushing against your cheek. The world seemed to go a little quieter.
He was looking at you the way he sometimes did — like he was trying to memorize you. It made your stomach twist, not in a bad way but in that way that felt too much.
You swallowed. “You good?”
“Yeah,” he said softly, still not letting go.
You could feel your pulse jumping under his fingers. The silence stretched — not heavy, just fragile.
Then, before you could stop yourself, you said it.
“I love you.”
It came out casually, almost like a reflex — the same tone you might’ve used to say “you’re ridiculous.”
But the second the words hit the air, your brain caught up. Your eyes went wide.
Leo blinked. The faintest flicker of surprise passed over his face — quickly replaced by something softer, unreadable.
You opened your mouth to backtrack. “I mean— that was— I didn’t—”
He interrupted you with a laugh, low and breathy. “You didn’t mean to say it like that, huh?”
You groaned, burying your face in your hands. “I hate my mouth.”
“Hey.” He tugged gently at your wrists until you looked at him again. His expression had gone warm, eyes glinting in the dim light. “For what it’s worth…” He hesitated just long enough to make your heart stop. “…I love you too.”
You blinked. “You’re just saying that because I said it first.”
“I’m saying it because it’s true,” he replied easily, voice quiet but steady. “But yeah— maybe I should’ve said it first.”
He leaned forward, brushing his thumb across your cheek before pressing a kiss to your temple. “Guess you beat me to it.”
You huffed, cheeks still burning. “You’re so annoying.”
“Yeah,” he said with a smile, resting his forehead against yours. “But you love me anyway.”
And you did.
Even when he teased you for the rest of the night about your “accidental confession,” and even when you threw a pillow at his face in protest — you couldn’t stop smiling.
