Master Ataman and Buddy. Description from the novel:

I don't agree with the idea that Buddy (Sasha) had an aggressive personality from his childhood and as a new teacher.

Buddy was born into the poorest family and didn't receive support from his parents, so he grew up with the support of Ataman. (From the official Damnation novel) In a sense, Ataman is the older man Buddy respects and is closest to. Ataman(Ivan Judanovich) is the leader of the rebel forces.

From a young age, he needed to prove that he was a person worthy of investment.

If Buddy had been even slightly aggressive, he would have studied a job other than teaching. However, when Ataman saw this particularly intelligent boy helping young JD, he decided that he shouldn't become a warrior.

He felt that Buddy deserved to be a teacher who protects and guides young children, so even after Buddy became a guerrilla, he advised him to "keep living." (From the Damnation main story)

Ataman was a very sensible teacher to his children, in the sense that he did not raise Buddy in a way that was convenient for him and respected his child's character.

In fact, he did not let his student be injected with the ampoule that would have turned him into a monster, and instead chose to sacrifice himself, as he was getting old and did not have much time left, to protect his student.

It's almost a complete transformation from an honest, peaceful young teacher to a calm, aggressive guerrilla. Considering that JD remained unchanged, we can imagine the deep pain Buddy must have felt at losing his fiancée and his students. He experienced such despair that only death could redeem him.

In the Damnation novels, Leon felt like he was being kicked in the butt by his fallen comrades. He believed that this was what motivated him to keep living and fighting.

Buddy, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. His devotion lay in sacrificing himself for the sake of the students who had died.

Devotion to the dead was at the core of Buddy's guerrilla character. Buddy later returns to teaching, but his dedicated nature remains unchanged.

Now, with both the spirit of a kind teacher and a tough guerrilla, he will protect and guide his students, respecting the students' autonomy, just as Ataman did.

誠実で平和的な若い教師が、冷静で攻撃的なゲリラになるのは、ほとんど真逆の存在への転身です。 JDが何も変わらないでいられたことを思うと、婚約者と生徒達を奪われたバディの深い傷を推測することが出来ます。彼は死によってしか贖えないほどの絶望を味わいました。 死者への献身はゲリラのバディの軸でした。

レオンはダムネーション小説で、死んでいった仲間達に尻を蹴飛ばされている、と考えていました。そのために生き続け、戦い続けると思っているのです。 バディはまさに逆。死んでいった生徒達のために自らも殉死することが彼の献身なんです。

バディはこの後再び教師に戻りますが、バディの献身的な性質は変わっていません。 現在は優しい教師と、強靭なゲリラの精神二つを持って、生徒達を守り導くでしょう。生徒たちの自主性を尊重したアタマンがそうしたように。

【小説独自の設定／時代性】

小説では、レオンはバディがアンプルを使用したことでショックを受け、自殺を考えています。

その後、レオンは自殺願望を必死に抑えようとしますが、バディはためらうことなく自分の顔に銃を突きつけます。これもまた対照的です。

レオンはバディだけが楽なのは不公平だと思ったかもしれない…

戦いの終わりに、自殺しようとしたバディに、レオンはついさっき自分の自殺を思いとどまらせた思いを言葉でバディに伝えました。

レオンにとって、鏡のような姿で創造されたバディを救うことは、自分自身を救うことと同じであり、バディにかけた言葉は、レオン自身の人生に対する答えでもあった。

バディが自殺しようとするのを止めることは、特に小説の中のレオンにとっては、自己救済の行為でもあった。

しかし、

映画公開時のパンフレットに掲載されたクリエイターインタビューや、限定版ボックスに収録された設定資料集などから、小説で描かれたレオンの自殺願望は小説家によるオリジナル設定であると考えられる。

これは（レオンの自殺願望）、前述の 2 冊の本ではまったく触れられていない設定であり、映画が作られた当時はレオンの自殺願望は存在しなかったことを示しています (小説でのみ設定されていました)。

それまでバディがレオンの信念を判断する役割を担っていたことは公式に認められているが、少なくとも公式のストーリーでは、彼はレオンの自殺願望を呼び起こすことはない。

これはJDとレオンのやり取りですが、彼が「助けて」と言ったら終わりです。彼にはどうしようもできない。JDの嘆願を聞いた瞬間、レオンはバディを救わなければならないと感じたのです。
