Summary: When you are injured after the attack on your crew in the field on Paradise, Walter tends to your injuries.
Paradise
Fuck this hurts.
Whimpering softly, your hand pressed firmly against your arm. Outside, the rain down poured. But, you and what remained of the crew had taken shelter in the ruins of the engineer city. The home of the synthetic David whom had brought you all here after saving your lives from those creatures back in the wheat field. During the attack, you had been knocked onto the ground. Had fallen onto some sort of planet. Sharp, and prickly. And, it was completely unknown to any of you if it was poisonous or not. Luckily, nothing had become imbedded into your skin. Although, you still were injured. And it was causing you a great deal of pain.
While the others, took a moment to breath. To recover. You had sunken down onto the floor. Collapsed there.
Leaned back. Head and body resting against a stone.
This is a shit show.
We shouldn't have come here.
It was supposed to be a simple planetary survey. Just take some samples.
See if this ecosystem could be livable.
Then, it all happened so quickly. Ledward, Karine, Hallet. One by one, your friends and crew members were being killed off. And none of you, could have possibly seen it coming. Expected it.
Now that you were here?
It didn't matter anymore. About this place becoming a home.
All that mattered, was getting into contact with the ship. The others. And getting the hell off of this planet.
And never looking back.
"L/N?"
Your head peered upwards. At the sound of the familiar voice.
Walter.
He stood just barely a few feet from you. Head titled. As he had assessed your state, studying you.
"Walter?"
"You have been injured." He stated.
You look down to your arm. Then, back up at him.
"Yeah..."
Walter knelt down onto one knee in front of you. "May I?"
Asking permission to examine.
You nod. "Yeah, go ahead."
Once you remove your hand from the wound, Walter reaches out. Gently taking your arm in his hands.
To examine.
A series of angry scratches lined your arm. Red, throbbing.
Bloody.
"When did this happen?" He asked.
"Back in the field. When one of those creatures attacked." You'd tried to fight it off. But it was too fast. Stronger than you had expected it would be. "I got knocked down. Fell onto some sort of sharp plant. It slashed me."
He moved your arm.
But, you whimpered again. It sending a sharp pain.
"Fuck."
Walters eyes grow slightly. "I apologize. I did not mean to cause you discomfort."
"No, it's okay. Not your fault."
You shake your head.
"How bad is it?"
"It does not appear to be fatal." He spoke, in that analytical tone. "But, this should be treated to prevent infection."
"Yeah, of course." You nod.
"I can assist you with applying medical attention." He looked over. Laying eyes on your backpack. Which, was sitting on the ground beside you. "I will require the med kit that's inside of your bag."
"Go ahead."
You then, grabbed it. Pushed over to for him to take.
He takes in his hands.
He opens up the bag. Reaching inside to grab the med kit.
He placed it down in front of it. Unlocking the snaps and opening it, to the reveal the contents inside.
He then, takes the proper steps before proceeding. Cleaning his hands. Sterilizing the tools he'll be using. Which, included a pair of tweezers. Incase he needed to remove anything.
Then, he put a pair of gloves on. That was provided in the med kit.
"I'm going to rinse the wound." He tells you. "But, I need to warn you this may cause you some further discomfort."
"It's okay. I can handle it."
He retrieved a bottle of saline solution. Slowly, placing it on the wound.
You grit your teeth.
As it hit the wound, it sent a shock of pain through your body. Making you jerk.
"Shit." You mutter.
"I need to see if anything is lodged in the wound." He tells you. You nod again, as he picked up a small magnifying glass.
He placed it over your arm.
He tilts his head. As he searched for any signs of foreign objects.
"Anything in there?"
"It appears there's some sort of thorns from the plant. I'll have to remove them."
He reached down.
Retrieving a pair of tweezers now. To use to remove them.
"Brace yourself."
You nod.
With a special kind of precision, he begins to remove the thorns.
ONE.
"Ouch."
TWO.
"Fuck."
"Are you okay?"
Walter glanced up, searching your face for any signs of further pain.
"I'm...good."
"There's one more remaining." He replied. "I'm going to proceed with pulling it out of your arm, now."
"Go ahead."
THREE.
You grit your teeth again. "Shit..."
"I've removed the last one."
"Fuck, that hurts."
"My apologies."
"It's okay."
Once the thorns were out, Walter placed the tweezers and magnifying glass back down. The thorns, placed in a small plastic bag. Which, he put down as well to keep them contained.
Then, he grabbed a small tube. Filled with anti-cream.
"Once I apply this, I can patch it up."
He opens the tube. Squeezing the cream onto your arm. Making sure to apply just the right amount.
Before, putting it back.
"Once, I bandage you I'll be done."
"Okay."
He retrieves a bandage from the medical kit. Then, he unfolded it. Placed it under your arm, and began to wrap it.
He's extremely gentle. As he covered the wound up.
Securing with adhesive straps.
"Done." He stated.
"Thanks."
You pulled your arm away, to gentle rest it in your lap.
"Of course." He nodded.
Your gaze then flickered downwards. To his arm. Where, his left hand was gone. It had been bitten off. By one of the creatures in the wheat field, in his attempt to shield Daniels from its attack.
He sacrificed his hand to save her. Because it was his duty to protect.
Her, you, the crew.
"Are you okay? That looks rough."
You then gestured with your head. Down to his arm.
Walter looked down.
He blinked. Processing the implication of your words. "I am still operational, if that is what you are asking."
"Does it...hurt?"
"No. I do not experience pain the same way your kind does." He replied.
"But, can't you still feel it's missing?"
Surely, right? That he still had a way of recognizing it's gone.
"My systems recognize that it is no longer present." He tells you. You pursed your lips. So, yes. His body was able to tell him that his hand was no longer there. Wasn't functioning.
"I'm sorry you lost your hand."
Regardless, if he wasn't human. You knew it still had to be a pain.
"Don't be. I only did my duty."
Your gaze turned to Daniel's and Oram. Who were taking to each other.
And from the looks of it? It looked like they were just as exasperated as everyone else. Under a lot of stress.
You looked back to Walter.
"Walter?"
"Yes?"
"Did you know this was going to happen?"
Walter tilts his head, confused.
You went on. "I mean, coming here. Knowing how dangerous it would be."
He was an intelligent being. Surely, a part of him could have calculated this. Right? Had to of known the risks of coming here. Perhaps, even stopped Oram was bringing them here.
Prevent the deaths they'd caused.
"I ask if I knew people would die?"
"Yes..."
Walter paused.
He took a moment to consider your words. To calculate an answer.
"I calculated risk.” He finally, answered. His voice, quiet and steady. “However, I did not foresee the extent of the danger that we encountered by coming here.”
Rain drummed harder against the crumbling stone outside. And you swallowed.
“You did know something would go wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you say anything?” You asked him. “Why didn’t you try and stop Oram from bringing us here?”
Why would he let them come here?
Especially, if he knew it could be dangerous. People might die.
Walter’s eyes lowered. Not out of shame. But out of processing. Quiet reflection. “I offered advisement. But, Captain Oram was intent on investigating the signal. His command supersedes my recommendation.”
You clenched your jaw.
Looked away. Hiding the tears, threatening to spill.
You didn’t want to blame him.
It wasn’t his fault. He tried to advise Oram against it. But, Oram was ultimately the one who made the decision.
Maybe it was just because you were scared. Angry.
Uncertain.
“He should have fucking listened to you.”
“I imagine he has come to that conclusion, now.” He nods.
“This is his fucking fault.”
If he hadn’t of brought you all here, this wouldn’t have happened. The others, would still be alive. Be okay!
“He’s a fucking idiot.”
“Captain Oram only thought he was doing what was best for the mission.” Walter said.
“Yeah well, he fucked up.”
“You blame him for this?” Walter asked.
You forced yourself to look back to Walter.
A tear fell from your eye. “I don’t know, Walter. I just…”
Wanted an explanation.
A reason for all of this. Why it was happening to you and the team.
“You’re frightened.” He stated.
“Yes.” You whispered.
All you wanted was to get back to the ship. To leave.
For this to be over.
“Your fear and anger is not without reason.” He reached out. Placed a gentle hand on your knee. “We have lost good men and women today. Been thrust into a bad situation.”
“I just want to get back on the ship and go.” You croak.
“I know.” He softened his expression.
“Walter, what if we don’t make it back?” You shake your head. “Back to the ship. To the colonists. What if-“
“We will.”
“But-“
“My directives are to ensure nothing happens to you, your crew, or the colonists.” He spoke firmly. “I intend to not fail them.”
He squeezed your knee.
“That is a promise.”
You let out a breath.
Trying to compose yourself. As you wiped your face with your sleeve.
Then, you gave him a nod. “Okay.”
And maybe, just maybe you believed it could be okay…
