This cultivar of the Lodgepole Pine Pinus contorta came from a mutation discovered and propagated by Allan Taylor. The new candles do not initially produce chlorophyll so they are a brilliant yellow initially but will turn green in time. Because they initially lack chlorophyll, propagating this cultivar requires grafting onto a standard clone.
Allan Taylor was a linguistics professor at the University of Colorado. He was also an avid horticulturalist and passionate about about many species of trees (particularly oaks and witches brooms). The lengths to which Allan would go to propagate plants are legendary among those who knew him. He passed away in December.
