Masterlist | Marvel | Give Me Shelter, For My Heart | Bucky Barnes
You were hungry, so hungry, and worse, the pup was hungry too.
There was something primal about hunger that always made you lose your mind a little. Unable to think clearly or problem solve. You couldn't remember if it'd been like that before. Before HYDRA, before the wolf. But it had certainly become worse after days spent in a cold cell or a brightly lit laboratory.
Now you paced in your wolf form, feet soft on the woodland ground, contemplating inching closer to the compound that James visited every day. You didn't wholly trust Sam or Steve, but they seemed nice enough. Nice enough not to hurt you if you were contrite enough in your pleas.
Your stomach clenched again and you were sure you could feel your pup wailing inside, just as James returned.
He smiled, seeing you, and you ran over, leaping at his chest and knocking him on his back, licking his face before your wolf slipped away and you found yourself in his lap.
"Well this is a very nice surprise." He smiled, taking in your now naked form.
You'd meant to at least say hello, but your body had other ideas. "Can I eat those" You blurted out.
Bucky looked at the bag of chips in his hand and then back at his hungry omega, "of course."
"You don't mind sharing," you paused, hand already grabbing at the bag of chips.
"Not with you," he watched you, eyes full of love.
"Thank you," you tore into it, spilling a few chips on the ground. "Fank you Alpha."
"My Omega," Bucky held you as you ate, "you're gonna finish the whole bag, and then I'll make you something else. Is my pup hungry in there?" He rubbed a hand over your swollen belly, poking out of the bottom of his red Henley that you'd stolen from his drawer.
"So hungry, but I can cook, you relax and —"
"Let me take care of you."
"James you can't —"
"Watch me, of course I can. I'll always take care of you, and you too." His hand patted your belly.
Things are missing around the Avengers' compound and a newly returned Bucky is acting weirder than normal...Steve and Sam go to investigate and discover more than they bargained for.

Catch up here: Chosen
Every step you took away from your family and toward Bucky’s mother and sister made you feel uneasy yet relieved.
The alpha felt the tension in your body. He wanted nothing more than to wrap you in his arms and show everyone that you are his. Bucky didn’t follow his instinct, though. He knew better than to scare you off.
“You’re doing so well. Just breathe and ignore them.” His voice and scent calmed and eased your nerves. “I know you are scared about what’s going to happen next. You don’t have to be. They will never hurt you again. You’re safe with me. Always.”
You desperately wanted to believe the alpha. He had no reason to lie to you or trick you. Maybe, just maybe, he was honest about his intentions. Or maybe he was another bootlicker trying to get in your sister’s good graces. It wouldn’t be the first time you trusted the wrong person.
“I don’t…know.” You murmured, your eyes still glued to the floor. “No one ever protected me. They all do everything to please my sister. If you want to do the same, you should know she’s only ever going to mate with the most powerful leader of a pack.”
Bucky stopped walking. He dropped your hand to step in front of you and cup your cheek. His hand was warm on your skin when he said, “I came to you to make you my omega. I don’t even know your sister’s name.”
The alpha watched your face with concern. He could see the pain and hurt in your eyes. “Her name is Y/S/N. You should reconsider your decision. I told you, I’m no one.”
“You’re a hard nut to crack.” Bucky flashed you a cocky smirk. “I like me a feisty omega putting me in my place.” He took your hand again to lift it to his lips. "I don’t want to know her name. The only name I want to remember for the rest of my life is yours.“
Your cheeks heated up, and you couldn’t stop your heart from doing somersaults. This alpha was so unlike the ones you met before. They were all loud, rough, and aggressive. Most of them ordered you around and treated you like trash.
“She always gets what she wants,” you suddenly said. “My sister wanted your attention, and she will get it. No one has ever been interested in me for long. She always found a way to win them over.”
“Omega,” Bucky used his alpha voice this time. A softer version to get your attention, not to make you compliant. “Do not mistake me with these alphas. If you can even call them that.”
Your whole body went stiff when he leaned closer to nuzzle your neck and inhale your scent deeply. “I’m your mate, the alpha of the largest pack. I will not bring shame over my mate, myself, or my pack by playing stupid games.”
Your sister was stomping her foot when Bucky smiled at you. She angrily scoffed and tugged at your mother’s wrist. “She can’t steal him! He was supposed to choose me. I bet she poured something in his drink or used one of her tricks!”
While you were absorbed in Bucky’s presence and his scent, your sister and mother tried to figure out a way to destroy the bond forming between you and the alpha.
He was about to guide you toward his family and friends when they stormed toward you. Your sister’s shrill voice ruined the sweet moment, and you immediately shrank into yourself.
“What’s wrong?” Another alpha asked, stepping toward you and Bucky. “Buck, why is that girl screaming your way?”
“Steve, perfect timing." Bucky sounded annoyed when he looked at the alpha. “I need some people to be removed from this event.”
“YOU!” Your sister was about to throw yet another tantrum. She spat venomous words your way when Steve blocked her path. But for the first time, you didn’t take her behavior to heart. “She ruined everything. Get her out of here! She’s nothing but a cockroach eating my leftovers.”
“That's her?” Steve cocked his head to look at Bucky. “Do you want me to give them the special treatment?”
Bucky glanced at Steve, silently telling his best friend and ally to get rid of your sister and mother. He then turned back to you, his hand gently running over your head. “We don’t want to cause a scene. I found my mate. It’s a reason to celebrate, not for drastic measures.”
“I’ll be sure they understand their place.” Steve closed the distance between him and your family with three long strides. “Ladies.” His commanding voice made your mother stop in her tracks. She stiffened and looked, for the first time in her life, frightened. “My friend, the host of this year’s event, wants you to stay in the shadows where you belong. If not, I’ll gladly show you the door.”
You watched as your sister’s face twisted in anger. She was furious but didn’t dare disobey a tall and powerful alpha like Steve.
Bucky ignored your sister and mother. The alpha guided you toward his family, murmuring soft, encouraging words. “My mother and sister will love you. They have been rooting for me to find my mate for years.”
Your eyes were darting around the room as Bucky guided you toward two women. The younger one waved at you and Bucky while the elder one offered a soft smile, crinkling her eyes.
“Mom, Rebecca,” Bucky said when you reached them, “this is Y/N, my mate. I finally found her.”
His mother choked out a sob before you found yourself wrapped in a warm embrace.
“Dear,” you were too stunned to react. “We are so glad my son finally found you. I knew he must’ve scented his mate because he ignored the food and everything else.”
“Mother,” Bucky hissed. “I’m a big alpha and have an appetite.”
You hesitated, unsure if you deserved this genuine, warm welcome. His sister took your hand, while his mother told you everything about her son with only a few lines.
“Mrs…” You wrinkled your forehead. Bucky only told you his first name, not his surname. “I’m sorry. I don’t know how to call you.”
Bucky’s mother’s smile widened. She hugged you again, soothingly running one hand over your back. “You can call me Mom from now on. We are going to be family soon.”
Rebecca immediately piped in. "You can call me Becca; all my friends do. Or, if you are comfortable with it, you can just call me sister.”
Behind you, your sister’s voice grew louder. She began to argue with Steve, but the alpha wouldn’t have it.
“I gave you a choice,” he said. "You chose to embarrass yourself.”
Steve motioned for security to escort your family out. The crowd parted, exposing your sister and mother to everyone. You could hear some of the guests chuckle, and some openly laughed. And others clapped their hands.
You didn’t look at them, only at Bucky’s family. They softly spoke to you, offering food and a seat at their table. Bucky's hand moved to the small of your back, encouraging you to join his mother and sister.
“I’ll be right back. No one is going to make you feel like a nobody ever again,” he said. “Give me five minutes to handle things and calm the guests.”
Rebecca simply took your hand to guide you toward the seat next to Bucky’s. A butler pulled the chair for you, bowing like you were someone important.
“Y/N, what do you like to eat?” Bucky’s mother asked, with that warm smile on her lips. “You can have whatever your heart desires.”
“I…” Your voice cracked. No one asked you what you like before. “I don’t know.”
“Well, then let’s find out what you like,” Rebecca cheerfully said. “My brother will be right back, Y/N. Don’t worry. If Bucky likes someone, he fights for them like a lion…”

“Stay in the shadows. Be good. And don’t embarrass your sister,” your mother warned you. It wasn’t enough that you were covered in a gray sack while your sister was wearing a beautiful, custom-made designer gown.
You simply nodded. There was no use in resisting or talking back. Whatever your sister wanted, she got.
“Just help your sister make a great first impression on one of the alphas of this pack. They and their allies are the most powerful people you will ever meet. If you ruin this bond for us, you’ll regret it.”
With your head bowed, you hid your anger behind a smile, making your cheeks hurt.
“I won’t,” you whispered lowly. If only you survived this whole chosen-mate farce, you could go back to fading in the background. “I won’t try to steal her spotlight.”
“How could you ever steal her spotlight?” Your mother asked. “You didn’t even brush your hair or wear the dress I prepared.”
You didn’t argue with your mother. She would’ve brushed you off, not believing you if you told her that your sister ruined the dress and threw your brush away. A ruined dress wasn’t worth getting yelled at. A nicer dress wouldn’t have changed your status or the way people treated you.
While you obediently followed your mother and sister inside the huge and impressive mansion, you didn’t dare look around. This wasn’t a place you’d ever see again. You didn’t belong here.
“Know your place,” your sister hissed through gritted teeth. She was smiling brightly at the people in the huge, luxurious ballroom. A stark contrast to her harsh words.
You gritted your teeth. Years filled with punishment and silent treatment from your family taught you how to control your emotions. If you ever gave in to your anger, you’d rip your sister’s throat out with your teeth. She makes your blood boil, and you can’t stand her.
Only for a second did you lift your head. A pair of blue eyes met yours. He was holding your gaze before a smirk crossed the handsome man’s features. He was undoubtedly a powerful alpha. The kind of man who wouldn’t look at you twice.
Averting your gaze, you tried to tame your racing heart. You shouldn’t have looked at the man. He was far out of your league.
“Behave.” Your mother’s voice warned. She saw you looking at the alpha’s way and didn’t like it. “Stop embarrassing us. He’s not for you. None of them will even look your way.”
“I know,” you replied. Daydreams and hope weren’t part of your life anymore. You gave up hope a long time ago. If you hear that you are not good enough all your life, you believe them sooner or later.
Waiting for the party to end, you hid in the shadows for most of the time. No one seemed to mind. The waitresses ignored your presence, and the guests were busy bragging about their power, wealth, and status. You didn’t blame them.
Your timidness and the old, worn-out dress you wore didn’t help. People don’t want to socialize with people who cannot find their voice or look them in the eyes.
It was near the end of the event that your sister hissed your name and insisted on your presence. She loved to humiliate you in public. Most people loved gossiping and talking about the unwanted girl living in the shadows of her beautiful and graceful sister.
“Come here, check on my dress,” she hissed, snapping her fingers. You wanted to sigh but followed her orders. Resistance would’ve led to punishment, and you didn’t want them to humiliate you even more in front of a foreign pack.
“Yes, sister,” you murmured instead. You looked her all over and forced a smile on your face to appease her. “Everything looks perfect. You look perfect.”
She giggled and twirled in her dress like a teenage girl. “I know.”
“You’re always perfect,” your mother cooed, patting your sister’s cheek. “So, unlike that useless brat. She only ever complains.”
You pressed your lips together, ignoring the sharp pain in your chest. Her words shouldn’t have hurt you any longer. But they did. Years of neglect and hurtful words did nothing to ease the pain.
“I never complain. Not anymore,” you whispered, but your mother caught up on your words. She glared your way, ready to slap you, when one of the alphas slowly walked toward you. “Behave. We’ll settle this later.”
“That’s Alpha Barnes,” your sister said, gleaming with joy. She gasped and pressed one hand to her heart. “If he chooses me, this will make Daddy so proud.”
You winced hearing them talk about your father. A weak beta letting your mother and sister walk all over you and sometimes him too.
Alpha Barnes stopped in front of your sister. He didn’t have to introduce himself or greet your mother and sister. Everyone knew why the most powerful alphas of all packs came here that day. They wanted to find a mate and forge new bonds.
He took a moment to size your sister up. An unpleasant sound left his lips as he brushed past your sister. Alpha Barnes ignored that your sister tilted her head while drowning him in her sweet scent.
“Alpha Barnes.” Your mother tried, but he ignored her presence. Before you could react, he was standing right in front of you to grab your hand.
“What’s your name? My name is Bucky." His voice was smooth like velvet when he talked to you. “Please don’t be afraid. I saw you hiding in the shadows. You didn’t get the chance to eat.”
“I—” You couldn’t think or answer. Eyes wide and fearful, you looked up at the alpha, whimpering in distress. Your mother and sister were seething next to you; their eyes were filled with rage.
“She’s no one. Only the maid,” your sister answered before you could find your voice. “Ignore her, alpha.”
“Who asked you?” He growled her way. “I asked her. You should know your place.” He repeated your mother and sister’s words from earlier.
“Y/N,” you murmured. “I’m…no one.”
“You think I’d come over and hold your hand if you were a nobody?” Bucky asked, tilting his head to watch you melt in his presence. Your scent got stronger, and he chuckled when you leaned a little closer. “You’re my mate. I scented you the moment you set foot into my territory.”
“She’s…no one!” Your sister protested, but the alpha didn’t care. He stepped impossibly closer, still holding your hand.
“If you talk about my mate like that again, I’ll have your tongue removed,” Bucky hissed over his shoulder. “I saw her and knew she was mine. It didn’t matter that you tried to dim her light with that dress.”
The alpha interlaced his fingers with yours. He guided you away from your sister and mother, murmuring gentle, encouraging words as the crowd stopped talking to watch him lead you away from your past and toward an unknown future…
do you think you might ever do a follow up to First and Last? It’s my all time favorite work of yours! (no pressure, just genuinely curious 🥰)
Oh, nonnie. That fic! An oldie in a good way. One of my personal favorites.
I have wanted to expand on it. It would just be a matter of when and the direction I'd want to take it. I feel like @americasass81 would cheer me on if I did.
