‘ hot chocolate helps. and good company. ’ (from Arjeant to Alrek)
It was late in the evening when the young half-garlean had found himself visiting one of the local inns. While he normally would have found himself back in the private quarters he’d shared with his traveling companion tonight was just one of those nights in which he didn’t have the energy to make it all the way back, even if he had his ‘horsebird’ to help make the trip easier.
He had been exhausted from his mission in dealing with the Dravanians that he hadn’t even heard the heavy armored footsteps of said traveling companions approach until the man had taken a seat next to him and slid over a piping hot mug of Hot Chocolate. The young man for a moment jerked and was drawn out of his fatigue when he saw Arjeant and he snorted out “You’re always just a few steps behind me... if I didn’t know better I’d think you were my shadow...” he let out with a sigh before carefully taking the mug and pulling it over “Hot chocolate... of course you would...”
“Well... hot chocolate helps put a bit of ease to ones fatigue. As does good company.” the Elezen let out with a soft smile “And you looked as though you could use both.”
Okay this may be a lot to ask, but could you do physical descriptions of some of your main characters?
Sure, here’s my two main babes!
Alrek has dark brown eyes and midlength dark hair, and usually a bit of stubble (he’s in the habit of plucking his beard every week or so, a habit picked up from his upbringing—he doesn’t trust his clumsy hands around a straight razor). His skin is a sandstone brown. He’s around five feet tall. He wears very scuffed-up leather armor and carries a haversack, as well as often a backpack. A notched silver scythe is strapped to his back, and there’s a hunting knife at his belt.
Basically, he’s dressed like someone ready for anything, though most of his gear is in the haversack.
Larya Nuptuel has long, wavy dark hair and big, vivid green eyes. Her skin is a darkened sepia from a childhood spent in the Sagebrush, and she is actually pretty muscular—Larya’s no stranger to farmwork, though she’s a little bit out of shape nowadays. She’s around six feet tall. She wears plain brown or green robes, or alternatively, very simple clothes—white or brown button-ups, skirts, and the occasional pair of shorts.
In the case of shorts and short skirts, it’s worth nothing that she’s a lot more attentive to shaving her legs and arms if she’s expecting to be around a lot of humans. For a trip into fey areas, she often won’t bother. She carries a wooden staff, and sometimes has a backpack with whatever accouterments, trinkets, loot or toys she wants to bring on a given mission.
Larya occasionally cuts her hair very short, especially when on very serious missions where she doesn’t want to be distracted. It grows back fast.
I generally don’t stickle too firmly on descriptions of my main characters, but this is what I usually envision!
"The Vikings have driven the Picts to extinction" it says. It's not accurate but it is way more dramatic than "the Vikings have driven the Picts to inconvenience". Sure, a Viking raid is bad news for the people being raided, but it's not quite the same as Kenneth MacAlpin deciding one day to go and check out how the Pictish bit of his kingdom is going and discovering no one there but these tall, blonde chaps in interestingly designed boats called things like Björn Hammeryourfaceoff and Erik the Extremely Violent.
The giant statue that Kenneth left of the Drunk Viking Being Carried Home By His Girlfriend is a nice touch though. Shame it's being eroded into etherealness, but it was the 9th century. Let's not be judgemental.
For years the Vikings had raided their lands and killed her people. Now the enemy lay in her bed…
Rescuing a Viking pirate from the ocean after his ship wrecked on the shores of Pictland was bound to bring Ilisa trouble. After all, she knew well of the savagery of the Vikings—she had experienced it first-hand. But her heart would not allow her to abandon someone in need. Unfortunately, nursing him back to health rouses a part of her she didn’t know existed and soon she’s the one in need.
Alrek’s well aware of his own need when he awakens in this beautiful Pict’s home. With his plans to venture to new lands on hold, he resolves to thank Ilisa for her help in any way he can—but not in the way he longs to the most. He must prove not all Vikings are the same. But his own savage past threatens to destroy any progress he makes and her people soon make it clear he will never be accepted.
Can they bridge the gap between two cultures or will their differences—and the dangers they bring—forever keep them apart?
So, let's get judgemental.
I'm stretching the definition to "Not in Scotland" a bit here, but the book is set in Pictland, which wasn't Scotland, so what I'm really saying here is that this book isn't set in Scotland, and I'm a genius.
Anyway, Ilisa needs to remember for the future that the first rule of first aid is that you're to not place yourself in danger in order to administer first aid! Now she's the one in need! I'm going to assume that she's caught a cold from fishing him out of the ocean or something. Alrek, being well-versed in the perils of sea travel, is well aware of his own need when he wakes up because he'll have caught colds before.
I like the idea that Alrek's savage past threatens to destroy any progress he makes when he sees a monastery and can't help pillaging it. His bad.
Can they bridge the gap between two cultures? Or will they just move somewhere else where people are less judgemental and/or don't know that Alrek's not a domesticated Viking?
Alrek yae Galvus in his new and upgraded appearance. I decided to go through with remaking his appearance and tweaking things only slightly. Namely giving him the longer hair and both of his eyes being a similar blue (slightly darker) than those of Zenos.
With a lot of the 4.5 stuff I got a lot of ideas for how Alrek was potentially brought into the world. A lot of things for him are likely going to be re-written but he’s still going to have connections to Zenos (Obviously if his name wasn’t a given for that already), he goes by Alrek Galvus in-game however as I preferred that to any sort of yae’galvus or similar. He also hangs out with @talechaser-ffxiv‘s Arjeant Greystone.
Regardless I’m having a lot of fun with him as a Machinist. I had originally wanted him to be a Samurai but I SUCK balls at playing the class. And I’ve been leveling it up on Jacques recently so I have an idea on what I’m doing with it, not so much Samurai even though I picked that up as well.
If you had to choose a way to die, what would you choose?
Oh man this one is actually a tough one with well all of my characters. I had plans for this for some and it’s still one that is hard to think of but here we go!
Jacques - For Jacques if he honestly had to choose how he would die then he would no doubt pick the more I guess courageous way out to some regard. Granted, it would take a LONG time for him to get there but if he is going to die then he’s going to die doing everything he can so that the people that he cares about in his life get away safely and alive.
Alrek - Alrek on the other hand would likely be the opposite of Jacques or he would rather just go the traditional route of either dying of old age or natural causes. He’s the type who would want to live his life to it’s fullest and not worry about other ways to die such as dying on the field of battle or at the hands of his enemies.
Character: Personification of Norway - Alrek Ivor Øyvind
URL: fridthjof
Demon Age: 872
Physical Age: around 18
Type of Demon: Demon of Envy
Personality: Alrek often avoids making interactions with anyone when he can avoid it. Although, when put it the spot of having to speak, he often lies if asked anything, and will act as if he full of energy. He acts cold towards anyone who intimidates him, and if found in the position of being face to face with them, he will break down quickly and beg to be left unharmed, although, if they continue to try, he will backlash and fight back quickly. Alrek is only ‘kind’ to his family and close friends, but will not act too coldly towards people who he is not effecting him negatively.
How he became a demon: A rather tragic accident on sea, losing most of his belongings and much of his family before he died shortly after
Strengths: He can often charm those who have formed a strong bond with him to oblige to his beck and call, however this only works with those that not only love him, but which he loves backIn battles, he is very good at long distance combat
Weaknesses: Alrek has a crippling fear of losing things that he’s earned, and gets extremely violent when someone takes something from him. When finding someone he enjoys being around, he becomes extremely clingy, and will be rather upset if abandoned He will brag about what little he gets, but this will usually get him into trouble, Alrek is not the best at defending himself either.
Roleplay Sample:
Alrek could have swore that i couldn’t possibly get worse then it already was. What, with every other person on the ship dead, and a raging storm that left him with half a boat that was slowly sinking to his death, its not like anything worse could happen. Except for his time be shortened even more. Waves began lifting and tossing what was left of the old boat side to side. Only barley able to balance himself on the highest point the air, he began panicking more and more as he thought of what happened. His family, they were dead, they drowned or fell early in the storm. All of his objects, ruined, or sunk to the bottom of the sea. He didn’t have much to fend with if he was to survive this. Which he doubted he would. As the ocean continued to go against him, the ship creaked, and began to sink at an alarming rate. Desperate to keep himself alive, he held his breath and hold onto the old ship’s walls. It wasn’t long before his head went underwater. Struggling to keep himself from breathing, he found soon that he was either going to drown, or suffocate. Alrek tried to yell, but only resulted in water filling his nose and throat, making him lose the ability to breath at all. His eyes filled with panic as black dots began filling his view. It wasn’t long before he could no longer move, and felt himself grow stone cold. He had died.
