Lecture 20: Founded in 1985 in Queens, A Tribe Called Quest performs in this music video their beloved song “Can I Kick It,” which simples Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” (1972). The group wanted to sample Reed’s song so badly they willingly signed over all of the profits from “Can I Kick It” to Reed, a deal he accepted. The song appears on the group’s 1990 debut album People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Today, A Tribe Called Quest is widely considered to be one of the very best groups from Hip Hop’s Golden Age.

Lecture 20: A Tribe Called Quest’s “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo” (1990) is a classic of humorous rap. Tribe, like De La Soul, specialized in jazz rap and alt-hip hop, and the two bands – who had very friendly relations with each other – both evolved in remarkable ways. There is a superb documentary about the band titled Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, from 2011 – please check it out if you get a chance. Sadly, Tribe’s founder, Malik Taylor, known publicly as Phife Dawg, passed away on March 22, 2016 at age 45 as a result of complications from diabetes. Rest in peace.
