Roughly 25 centuries ago, hysteria became a medical diagnosis used by male doctors for women experiencing a vast aray of unexplained phsyical and psychological symptoms. “Hysteria” comes from the Greek word for “womb” or “uterus”.
Hysteria was an official psychiatric diagnosis for females until the 1980s. Meanwhile, about 75% of neurodivergent femmes have gone undiagnosed.
This systematic lack of understanding of female health, and specifically neurodivergence in femmes has deeply and directly impacted Natalie and her matrilineal line. In What If She Had Known, Natalie Inga leaves behind an inherited fear of being “too much” and uses all the sonic space of a song to capture the range of emotions that come from a new understanding of herself and her family.
She braids images of her own experience and those of a family member through a raw and powerful vocal performance, a driving reggaeton drumbeat, heavy synth and guitars. The bridge will sweep you up, swirl you around, and set you down again.
