Princeton University’s Frank Sowinski ‘78 moved to Madrid, Spain on August 30, 1978 to play professional basketball with the Tempus team. He later returned to the United States for a business career.

Amazing Athletes Compete in Empire State Senior Games

Shuffleboard isn’t the only sport for seniors. In the Empire State Senior Games, athletes compete in everything from swimming and track & field to cycling, tennis, bowling—and, yes, shuffleboard.

Our community and the SUNY Cortland campus welcomes the arrival of physically fit, older athletes from across the state and beyond now through June 19th.

Approximately 1,100 registered participants will draw a bow on the archery range, run 1500 meters, swing a golf club, or volley a ball in our city.

It’s not all about the competition either. With the arrival of seniors 50-years old and older, they provide a steady flow of business to merchants and keep area restaurants hopping. From the local Bob’s Barbeque, which recently opened for the season, and Doug’s Fish Fry to a variety of eateries on Main Street in Downtown Cortland, there’s something for everyone.

Some participants use the games to qualify for the National Senior Games, which are held every other year (2016 being one of them). 

Perhaps you’ll see some of these fine athletes walking and perusing our city. Be sure to extend a friendly ‘hello’ as we welcome all Empire State Seniors and family members to another year of competition.
