one of the best things about robin hobb's writing is that, for each side character, you know they have a colossus of an iceberg beneath the surface, and they act out of a full, complex identity — not just the parts of themselves that fitz shows you / they show fitz. we only see the tip of these characters, but there's a real, definite sense that there is so much more going on below. the worst part about robin hobb's writing is hey i wanna see the rest of that iceberg
Has anyone read all in Batman and can possibly give me an explanation on why tf Tim quit being Robin because I’ve basically only seen those panels from the comic and I’m straight up confused.
Tim is quitting because he doesn’t like lying to Bernard about Robin, right? But Bernard literally knows that Tim is Robin. And I was under the impression that Tim knows that Bernard knows. I went through and read basically anything that has Bernard in it and there’s a comic where Damian comes into their houseboat while Tim and Bernard are there, and Tim throws a knife at Damian’s head and Damian catches it with no problem. That’s not exactly incriminating but what IS is that Tim literally tells Damian to fuck off and to “go ask another Robin” for help while Bernard is LESS THAN A FOOT AWAY. So I would assume it’s not a secret!! But also this was from one of those comics where they combine a ton of short stories into one and I have no idea how dc canon works so maybe that’s just not canon.
You could make an argument that Tim doesn’t know that Bernard knows, and I’d accept that, but it doesn’t explain Bruce. Maybe I’m dumb but I assumed Bruce knows that Bernard knows??? In Tim drake: Robin from a few years ago, Bernard calls up Batman and says “hey pls help Tim drake got kidnapped” and then we cut to Batman and Bernard saving Robin. Idk what happens between those scenes or what happens after they rescue Robin because we don’t see those scenes, but given we go from “Tim drake got kidnapped” to “we save Robin from being kidnapped”, surely he realizes that Bernard knows?? So why did Bruce not question the fact that Tim said his reason for quitting is because he feels bad about lying to Bernard, when I would assume that Bruce thinks that Bernard already knows about Tim being Robin? Am I missing something????
Either Bruce doesn’t somehow realize that Bernard knows Tim’s identity, or he DOES know and just assumes Tim is lying about why he’s quitting and for some reason is just not asking any follow up questions about why.
I feel crazy. What’s happening. Maybe it’s further elaborated on in the comic and I just didn’t read it, or maybe it will be explained in the future, but i am quite frankly confused. Perhaps I fully misunderstood or they just haven’t explained what’s going on yet idk 😔
also I’m sooo curious if Bernard knows who the rest of the bats are because I think it would be pretty easy to put together who most of them are if you figure out one of them. He has 2 interactions with Bruce, and one of them is him basically saying “every time he disappears to somewhere with you he comes back bruised” which could read as “hey I know you’re Batman” but it could also read as “I think you abuse your son” and while I’d like to think it’s the first one, if you haven’t read Tim drake: Robin you probably wouldn’t know that Bernard knows Tim is Robin. Also the first time they meet he says he thought Batman might have been a ghost or just straight up not real, so he might not actually know that Bruce is Batman.
Idk I just find Bernard to be a confusing character because it feels like every single writer is doing something completely different with him which sucks because he could be sooo interesting if they wanted to actually do something with him instead of just go “here’s Tim’s generic civilian boyfriend who has not purpose” 😔 he’s honestly a very interesting character when the writers actually do stuff with him and he seems like he would kinda fit in with the Batfamily pretty well. He’s got rich parents who fucking hate him, he’s incredibly smart and observant, he’s super understanding and kind, he knows that Tim is Robin, he’s also a very good fighter, and he clearly cares about Gotham in general. He’s also got weird shit with cults that they never fully elaborated on. Like… guys he joined a torture cult, seemingly willingly. Yeah they kidnapped him later on but (unless I’m misremembering which is absolutely a possibility) I think he joined of his own free will which is deeply worrying and they never properly elaborate on it and how Bernard seemed to genuinely start believing the shit the cult told him based on the interaction a detective has with Bernard’s friends that Robin eavesdrops on.
Idk. We haven’t really gotten to see much of Bernard at all but I liked the very little have seen so far and I wished they’d do more with his character. Maybe you could argue that the inconsistency comes from the fact that the writers haven’t read every single thing that Bernard is in which is typically a valid argument to make, but Bernard has been in maybe 20 issues of comics since his reintroduction and most of that is as a background character who doesn’t say much. it will take you around an hour or two to read everything he’s in. Idk. I don’t write comics so I don’t know what the process is.
(If I got information wrong it’s because I’m new to the comics and I’m a total poser :P )
god Eddie's season 5 arc is INSANE. the way it's woven into the season expertly from the very first episode to the very last. even the episodes where he doesn't have a storyline of his own feature a tiny scene that pushes the overall arc along and hint at the upcoming breakdown. the way that in its folds they've managed to weave in multiple compelling character dynamics. Chris & Eddie ("you could be dead next year" -> "you said it was scary for you Chris" "yeah but I can be brave" -> "the things that make you sad am I one of them?" "never") Bobby & Eddie ("go to hell Bobby" -> "you saved me and my kid" and Eddie helping Bobby stay sober without even knowing) May & Eddie (word of the day, the FOMO conversations. "how can I get back to the person I wanted to be" "I'll let you know when I figure that out") Linda & Eddie (the cooking conversations, THE GOD HAS SPOKEN MOMENT) BUDDIE (it was a panic attack you need to move on i have what are you afraid of that I'm never gonna feel normal again maybe that's the point yeah maybe it is i just wish i could- fix it? comes in handy when you've got holes in your wall) and even tiny little moments with Josh (you're a guest in this house) and his dad (I'm gonna do better. for Christopher? For me. maybe we can do it together) god what a fucking ARC
i have made the executive decision that everyone is wrong. kimi antonelli is not a brocedes lovechild, or 6333's child of divorce, or toto wolff's adopted kid. that is bono's son right there and you should put some respect on his name😤
