We examined, also, partially before dinner and partially after, a new matter, that the Lady Anne of Cleves should be delivered of a fair boy, and whose should it be but the King's Majesty's [Henry VIII], and gotten when she was at Hampton Court; which is a most abominable slander, and for this time, and the case in ure, as we think, most necessary to be met with all.

On the beginning of the Privy Council's investigation into a rumour that Anne of Cleves had given birth to a son fathered by Henry VIII. This occured in November 1541, at the same time as the investigation into Katheryn Howard, which this letter also discusses.

"This Nobleman [Anthony Browne], before he ope­ned his desire unto the Lady Magdalen, sought by letters the consent of the Queen [Mary], who with no small commendations of her maid, wrote him this answer: "Having consi­dered her person, her virtuous report, birth, great number of friends and other benefits which this Alliance will bring unto you, with other like motives, which I perceive you prudently ponder, I confess that I so favour this matter, as I do not only give free consent, that you treat with her therof, but also, so fit do I esteem this match to each of you, that with my heart I wish it a happy conclusion; and shall exceedingly enjoy that you have found so convenient a wife, and she so fortunate a condition." The Viscount having in this sort obtained first the consent of the Queen, & then of the Lady, of her Parents, and friends, married her in London at the King's house called S. James, the Queen her self with a great train of the Nobility being present."

#OTD in 1960 – An Irish peacekeeping force is ambushed in the Congo, causing the first overseas combat deaths of the Irish Republic.

Nine Irish peace-keeping troops die in the Niemba massacre in Congo. A total of 26 Irish troops died during the Congo deployment for which they were totally unprepared.
