Anytime I have to see Jayce forced into the same proximity as Mel my eyes roll so far into the back of my head. Why are you still forcing them together. He already broke up with her. He walked away and never looked back. Can you let him move on? Would it kill you to let him move on? Jesus Christ.

Amanda Overton is such a shit and incompetent writer I genuinely become angry whenever I am, unfortunately, reminded of her writing. I could go for hours upon hours about it, but it simply would not be worth all the time and energy. Maybe for analytical, educational purposes, it would, but I'm not a teacher.

Simply put, though: her admitting that she had to create an entirely new (and nonsensical) ship out of thin air just to make Caitvi look good indicates that she has no confidence in her main ship. She says having a lesser ship is necessary for a romance but it really, genuinely is not. That's something you only get in your head if you feed yourself nothing but cheaply made, mass-produced, love triangle bullshit, with flat characters and overall meaningless stories. When you write a relationship, it should be able to stand on its own. Caitvi can't, and it's hilarious that it can't with or without "lesser ships" to compare it to. It's just that bad, inherently, and everything else around it just makes it more egregious.

Overton is wholly incompetent. She's worse than a fifth grader writing for the first time with self-insert fic on Wattpad. It's annoying when she pats herself on the back for writing a flashy corporate 8 hour+ ad Now With Lesbians Having Sex Onscreen, and it's especially annoying when the majority of Arcane fans laud her for Caitvi and hold it up as absolutely revolutionary representation, when it's largely anything but.

Overton, and by extension, Caitvi, reinforces an oppressive status quo, just with lesbian paint on top of it, and it's not even out of ignorance. Amanda Overton genuinely believes that it's silly to have a distrust or distaste for the police - which she herself writes to be systemically brutal, prejudiced, and merciless. "Vi had to get over her 'all cops are bad' thing", she said. And the loudest, most annoying parts of the Arcane and Caitvi fanbase are just... fine with that. Because they agree.

Don't take this as me advocating for Meljay, by the way, in my opinion there is little to nothing good about that ship, in any respect, in part because the nature of its creation poisoned its chances before it could even start. That's a different discussion, though, and thinking about my endless gripes with this show exhausts me.

It's very telling that meljay only gets traction on twitter, the discourse website. And is irrelevant on instagram, bluesky, reddit, tumblr, etc.

I don’t even get why the delusional Mel stans wanted her to be with Jayce when they mostly openly hate him or say she was too good for him and hate his gutts for how he talked to her before the final battle and say it was OOC or that he was mentally unstable. Like there has to be some weird psychological explanation why they wanted her to be in a relationship and why they think her ending up single is such a crime (even tough she went trough 1000 other bad things somehow everything boils down to Jaymel didn’t work out bohooo Jayce chose the nerd turned ugly , purple void villain over our goddess )????????

I think it’s a self-insert thing. Just look at the way a lot of them talk about meljay as a ship. They don’t talk about the actual dynamics in the show. They always either say stuff like “mel is hotter than that ugly twink, why would jayce choose him over mel?” or turning it into a morality thing saying that if you don’t ship meljay you’re a racist and “ya’ll just hate seeing black women win”. They always bring up the canon sex scene as some sort of gotcha but when you bring up other canon plot lines (like mel’s manipulation of jayce) suddenly it’s invalid and you’re a racist for literally stating how things happen in the show.

Interestingly enough the meljay storyline doesn’t seem like it was written as a romance but rather as an obstacle for Jayce to overcome. The more he folds into Mel’s world (and moves further and further away from Viktor) the unhappier he gets and the more he strays from what he initially set out to do as a scientist. Jayce’s whole character arc is literally him finding his way back to Viktor and therefore to his original purpose. His relationship with Mel is an OBSTACLE. It was used to further deepen the conflict that tears Jayce and Viktor apart and once Jayce got OVER that obstacle (we were just investments to you) he finds his way back to Viktor (my place has always been in the lab with you; all I want is my partner back)

They don’t care about what’s actually in the show. It’s just a projection/self-insert thing! I’ve already said this on twt but that’s why you see a lot of them being supportive of meljayvik or melvik despite constantly crapping on viktor and calling him an ugly twink. They just want this character they’ve projected so hard into to be involved in everything bc they take it as a personal insult if she’s not the most desired person in the room.

meljay constantly getting ignored by riot for these official events is so damn funny to me. meljay fans can bitch and moan and cry victimization all they want on twitter and rake in thousands of likes on posts shitting on jayvik but in the end nobody gives a shit about that lame ass ship outside of petty fandom discourse. constantly getting ignored and sidelined by RIOT THEMSELVES is what those crybullies deserve
