A tale of urban deception (Part 1)

A city, much like any person, can show one part of itself while concealing its true spirit.  This series of pictures will be followed by Part 2, which will reveal the deception.

Typology Hybridization

Combination of the country club typology with that of a sports grandstand.

The project by MVRDV in Amsterdam is a mashup of a long low strip and the simplest of sports tribunes.

The tennis club houses the changing rooms at the edges, while a very dynamic space results from the superposition of the grandstand on top of the strip. The bent ceiling also contributes to prioritize the two glass openings on both long sides of the volume: in fact, by squeezing one side of the tennis club, the main façade-long opening faces the waters of the IJmeer lake. Facing the the tennis courts, the grandstand is elevated to favor the view of the matches. 

By blending the two funcions together, MVRDV are able to minimise the use of valuable playing space and to make sure that the new building is flexible and versatile, so that it can attract people beyond playing time.

Anti-smart Paris

The transition to the SmartCity calls for the creation of its heterotopic counterpart: a getaway where the Smart Citizen may return to a cave to forget about the rules of human relations and rediscover his bond with nature.

While this primitive park may be hundreds of miles away and actually shaped as a cave with no connectivity, it could also nest within the historical city.

This work by Camille Pajot shows her view of what the anti-smart Paris might look like.
