when i watched doctor who series 9 i always thought the hybrid in the finale was actually referring to the doctor and Clara's relationship and not JUST them as a duo because a running theme in that season is that time lord relationships are deeper and more complex than human ones because the master and the doctor care about each other despite the constant hostility, there bond transcends time and space and human conventions of what it means to love somebody and they don't need a label to define what they are. while human relationships are simpler and can be put into boxes like "romantic" or "platonic", they can break easier meaning Missy and the doctor could never have a human relationship because it just wouldn't last The doctor is a time lord and Clara is a human which lands their relationship as a "hybrid" between human relationships and timelord relationships. she can threaten to throw the TARDIS keys into lava and he will still wait billions of years in a torture chamber for the slim chance she survives. He can kiss or hold her hand and they can hug and they can say they love each other without there ever being romantic feelings between them. He can abandon her in a time of crisis and she can threaten to slap him so hard he regenerates and it very nearly breaks their relationship, but it doesn't. When she's grieving he takes her to the afterlife to find Danny. When he's a scared young child she comforts him. But she still dies in the end because she's a human and he's a timelord
