“Welcome to the Underground! My name is Curly, because of my cute little curl! Let me tell you how things work here so you don’t get hurt, okay? Rule Number One: in this world, it’s k̢̀i̸̴l̛͠l̸ ҉̧or͏̢ b̡̕e̛ ͘k̨i̶͜͡l̵̢lè͏d̨͠.͜”
A while ago Arin and I thought of an Undertale AU with our babes, haha, and it’s something we both hold dear to our hearts! So here’s a little draw I did a long while ago for it~
Avery tiptoed through the darkness, hands out and brushing feather-light against the unknown terrain around them. This wasn’t the first time they’d stayed the night at Megan’s place, but… Well, it was the first time their insomnia decided to be mean to them while there. And they tried laying in the dark, waiting for sleep to claim them, but the dryness in their throat eventually made them cave.
They’d just have to deal with another sleepless night.
They felt around for the cupboard, and carefully opened it, wincing at the click that seemed to boom through the silence. Slowly, carefully, they filled their cup with water and nursed it as they thought about their misfortune.
Maybe it was their fault for sleeping so much during the day? They couldn’t help it. Even when they got good sleep, there were just times where their eyes would grow heavy, and they’d drift off… And when they opened their eyes again, hours were gone.
There was no rhyme or reason. They could chill out for hours with no repercussions, then fall asleep the next day doing the same thing. A racing heart and dropping stomach could keep them up at night, and during the day it could knock them out like it was nothing. Why did they have to be cursed like this?
A part of them thought about asking Lucas for help. Surely he had something. But no, they couldn’t bother him. This was his time to work.
They let out a sigh. Maybe their crush’s kitchen wasn’t the best place to think about this. They could just go back to the couch and-
The light suddenly flicked on.
“You’re still up?”
Avery jumped- just barely managing to keep their yelp held back. But they still spilt water on themself. Their face grew hot as they set the cup down and grabbed a paper towel to try and clean themself.
“Um, I guess, I, uh, just couldn’t, you know,” they rambled out, feeling like their whole body was ready to just disintegrate. “Sleeping is hard. Sometimes.”
Megan watched them with an eyebrow raised. There was a quick moment of panic due to the look on her face. Did they wake her?
“Well, if you’re not going to sleep, you could keep me company,” she said, then raised a hand to her mouth and let out a yawn. “My paper’s due tomorrow and I need to revise it again, so…”
“Ah, yeah, I can do that,” they mumbled as they tossed the paper towel into the trash. “Um, if you’re sure, I mean…”
“I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t sure,” she said in that usual ‘you’re so dense but I love you’ tone.
“Right, right…”
Once they found themself nestled into a chair in Megan’s office, then focused on the sound of clicking and typing instead of the thoughts swarming around their head. There were too many things to think about. But this was a nice distraction.
“What’s this paper on?” they asked, knowing full well they wouldn’t understand it.
Megan opened her mouth and a slew of science-y physics words came barreling out. She went on and on, only pausing to curse and fix something in her paper. Honestly, if she was just reading it out to them, then they wouldn’t have been surprised. But they didn’t mind. even if most of the words went over their head, it was still nice listening to her voice.
But fatigue had to hit at the worst time. They curled up in the chair and struggled to keep their eyes open, even when sunlight began peeking through the blinds. But it was hard, so hard… They could drift off for just a moment…
Megan’s voice stopped, and their eyes peeked back open for a quick second. But a hand in their hair lulled them once more. And maybe it was their brain already making a sweet dream for them, but they could’ve sworn their felt a pair of lips press softly against their forehead right as the world faded to black.
The silence was heavy. Alexandra watched as Cookie and Mikey both shifted awkwardly in their seats. Cookie looked more worried, but Mikey still seemed rather uncomfortable. It was the same look he got on his face when she had caught him hanging around those fucking hooligans back when he was young.
“Are we playin’ the fuckin’ quiet game, or is one of ya gonna say something?”
Cookie jumped in his seat, then lightly nudged Mikey in the side with a firm look. Mikey groaned and crossed his arms, but finally opened his mouth.
“Look, about what I do…”
He scrunched his nose, then let out a deep sigh. “I kill people. Brutally.”
She blinked. No, that couldn't be right. “What the hell did you just say?”
“Ma, I’m a goddamn murderer,” he said, like he was already exhausted of this conversation. “I cut people open and I slice out their organs- usually after they’ve died but sometimes-”
“Mikey,” she sighed out, one hand pressed to her forehead. This wasn’t real. “Cookie looks sick. Shut up.”
For his part, Mikey looked ashamed and put his arm around the shoulders of a trembling Cookie. “Shit, sorry.”
Cookie took a deep breath. “I-It’s okay… Just… Please don’t do it again.”
With a kiss to Cookie’s face, Mikey promised, “‘Course.”
Meanwhile, Alexandra saw red. She clenched her fists in her lap, let out a huff, bit down on her lip to get this anger out. But none of it worked. Her Mikey was a murderer. He killed people. Preyed on the lives of others for his own gain like some parasite.
And she didn’t raise a goddamn parasite.
“Listen,” Mikey said before she had the chance to open her mouth. “It works. Now I have more money than half of the people that kept us down, ya know? All of us can live comfortably and-”
“You kill people,” she interrupted, voice low. The heat in her chest had sunk down as far as it could go.
Mikey frowned. “Yeah, but-”
“You kill people.”
“Ma-”
“Don’t you ‘ma’ me, Michael Andrew Gervain!” she yelled, getting to her feet. “You are a murderer! You leech off of other people for your own fuckin’ gain! What makes you better than everyone back home, huh!? Tell me!”
Mikey got to his feet too, as if he had the right to be pissed about this. “I have ethics, ma, that’s what makes me different! Those fuckin’ asshole will prey on anyone, everyone! You, me, it doesn’t matter! But I leave people out! I don’t kill the cream-puffs, I don’t kill kids! What sorta monster do you take me for!?”
“The kind who murders people!” she spat out, glaring at him. “What happened to my Mikey!? The sweet boy I raised!?”
“He had to grow the fuck up,” Mikey muttered darkly. “He had to survive in a cruel world, and he did. You can get all up in arms over it, or you can move the fuck on.”
She didn’t know how to feel. This was her son. But was it? She didn’t raise a serial killer. She didn’t raise him to be like this. She had hoped for more, hoped he’d get out of everything with his soul intact. But he didn’t. And now she didn’t know who the hell he was anymore.
A sniffle. She heard it, clear as day. When her eyes met Mikey’s, she saw a stream of tears running down his face.
“I do what I have to,” Mikey bit out, fists clenched at his sides. It was like he was trying to hold everything back. “And I don’t regret it. The only thing I regret is that you might hate me because of it. But you know what? Oh well. I’ve lived ten years without you. I can live fifty more.”
She huffed, teeth clenched. “Well, I can’t.”
Then she pulled him into the tightest hug she’d every given him. Filled with more love than the day he was born, more firm than the day his father died. After a long moment, Mikey hugged her back, soaking her hoodie as he buried his face in it.
“I can’t say I like your dumbass life choices,” she whispered and ran a hand through his hair. “But you’re still my baby boy. Even if you do some bullshit. Just don’t get hurt, or caught, or whatever, or else I’ll come after you and give you the ass-whoopin’ of your life.”
“Yeah, yeah. Just shut up and let me cry, ya old bag....”
“Little shit,” she grumbled out, but only held him tighter.
Then her eyes met Cookie’s. He had a smile on his face, though he was shaking like a leaf with tears running down his face too. So she opened her arms wider.
“C’mere, creampuff. You ain’t gettin’ away from this.”
He hesitated, but it didn’t take much for him to join the hug. He was Mikey’s boy, and that made him hers too. And even with all this skeevy murder bullshit going on, she’d love her sons until her last breath.
Snail was surprised when Daniel plopped himself down on the couch. Usually after work, he went straight to his office to try and catch up on his scripts that got erased.
The ones that Snail fucked up.
“I’m sorry.”
They blinked, unsure if they heard that right. “Huh?”
Daniel stared at the coffee table, hands laced together. He looked… Scared. Quietly, he repeated himself, “I’m sorry. For blowing up at you. I… I just felt so helpless. All my work, just gone. Like it didn’t matter.”
“Shit… Look, I-”
“Please,” he interrupted, finally looking at them. There were tears in his eyes. “Let me talk.”
They closed their mouth and nodded, stunned by his vulnerability.
“I know it wasn’t your fault,” he finally said after a long moment. “Whoever fixed my computer should’ve told you what would happen. And I shouldn’t have taken my anger out on you. I just… Lost control, and I knew things would be hell, and they are, but I was so selfish and now you-”
“Hey,” they stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay. I get it.”
Daniel immediately latched himself onto them. And they gently brushed their fingers through his hair.
“Why the fuck do you care so much, ma? I’m a goddamn adult! I don’t need to fuckin’ check in with ya anymore!”
“You’re still my son, Michael Andrew, and I won’t take this fuckin’ disrespect!”
The little shit thought he was so tough. A big man with his knife and his secret business, oh no. He was still just a baby. Only twenty-five, he didn’t know shit about the world. And if he was dealing with something unsavory, Alexandra was going to find out and stop him.
“What does that matter!?” Mikey yelled, throwing his hands into the air. “You don’t need to know shit! You ever hear that ignorance is bliss!? Well, it’s fuckin’ true! Now stop pesterin’ me and Cookie about it!”
“No,” she growled out, fists clenched painfully at her side. “I’m not going to let my sons get themselves hurt! Fuckin’ Cookie always shakes in his goddamn overalls whenever I ask about what you do! What the hell am I supposed to think!? How the fuck can you expect me not to worry!?”
“Oh my fucking god!” Mikey threw his hands all over, eyes piercing her with a glare. “I don’t need this fuckin’ interrogation! I shoulda just left you back home!”
The fire burning in her heart now flew up to her eyes. She tensed and did everything she could to keep the tears from pouring out, but of course she failed. “You little fucking asshole,” she muttered through clenched teeth. “You’re not the Mikey I raised. You’re just some fuckin’ monster that ruined my boy!”
His eyes widened and his face fell. But she didn’t care. She stormed out of the house, but not eve a block away she lost her steam.
Her boy. Mikey had changed, but did she have to go that far? The pain on his face, it tore through her like a butcher knife. She didn’t know enough to worry, she should’ve just let it be, she should’ve listened to Mama Cookie.
But she didn’t. And now she failed her son again.
Alexandra sat on the sidewalk, knees drawn up to her chest, face buried in her arms. She didn’t care, she didn’t want to move. She hadn’t felt this hopeless since she found that note, ten years ago.
I’m gone. Don’t look for me.
-Mikey
Those words were seared into her brain. Like a scar. And that scar ached and burned, torturing her with the reminder that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t do right by Mikey. Maybe Zachary had the right idea, after all.
“Mrs. Gervain?”
Her head shot up. Cookie stared at her, his eyes wide, grocery bags tucked under his arms. He hurried on over and sat next to her, but she turned away from him.
“Oh gosh, what’s wrong?” he asked gently and put a hoof on her shoulder. “Did something happen?”
“I pissed Mikey off,” she muttered bitterly. A surge of anger sparked back up. “I just wanted a damn answer from him. What does he do? And he blew up, and I blew up, and… It was a fuckin’ shitshow.”
Cookie instantly tensed up. “Oh… Well, um… Michael has his secrets. But… He’s just trying to protect you. ‘Cause he loves you and-”
“If he fuckin’ loved me,” she spat, now glaring at the ground, “then he wouldn’t have said he should’ve left me back home.”
An outraged gasp left him. His arm hooked around her shoulder and he pulled her close. “I don’t know what got into him,” he said, for once sounding angry. “But he shouldn’t have said that. And… And I know he doesn’t mean it either. When we brought you here, he was so happy, and… He said it was always his plan to come back for you.”
“But I’m sure he regrets it now,” she said. The road looked more interesting. “I mean, I think he should’ve left me too. I don’t know who he is anymore. Mikey was sweet, and caring, and a little rough around the edges, but he always tried his best… And now it’s like someone else is in his skin. Because I failed him.”
“No-”
“Just listen to me.” She took a deep breath. “I… I tried to protect him. But I failed. He’s jaded now. He’s… Cruel. And I could’ve stopped it.”
Her son had been torn apart by the wicked jaws of the world he grew up in. And she couldn’t save him. Couldn’t fling herself in his place. What kind of mother was she?
“He’s… Seen things,” Cookie said carefully. “But… Michael is still sweet, and caring. He’s just… It takes time for him to open up now. I’m sure he’ll finally talk to you when he’s ready.”
“But I ruined it,” she said, voice choked. “I called him a monster. My own baby boy, I fucking said that to him, and…”
Cookie let her weep. He felt warm, something for her to focus on to her herself under control. As the last of her tears fell, he finally spoke.
“I’m going to talk to him,” he assured gently. “And… And we’ll get this figured out. I promise.”
She gave him a shaky smile. “Ah, thanks… You know, if that little shit managed to snag someone like you, then… I guess he isn’t doing all that bad.”
Cookie’s eyes widened, and he smiled sheepishly, clearly flustered. “Oh gosh, I... Thank you, that’s so sweet!”
Yeah, Mikey couldn’t have been too terrible. This cream-puff made sure of that.
So you know how artists have speed paints and stuff? Well, I thought I’d do a little speed write, haha. This was a prompt given to me by my darling @ask-thehappykids. Some platonic Megan/Avery with Megan being a little protective~ It’s under the cut because I don’t want this clogging too many dashes, haha.
Avery couldn’t believe they let themself sleep in so late. After hurriedly getting dressed in the same outfit they wore they day before- no one would notice, hopefully- they rushed through the living room with the schoolbag in hand. Though they nearly tripped and face planted thanks to the blanket Lucas had kicked off in his sleep.
“Uh, don’t tell me I have to walk you today,” Lucas groaned, still half-asleep.
“N-No,” Avery assured, already halfway out the door. “Megan’s walking me today, don’t worry!”
Lucas didn’t even acknowledge them, only taking the opportunity to head right back to sleep. And that was fine. He deserved some rest. Though Avery couldn’t remember the last thing he really did…
That didn’t matter. They rushed out of the dorm to meet with Megan outside. And she didn’t look too happy.
“Seriously?” she asked with her typical scowl. “I almost just left you here. Don’t you have an alarm or something?”
“Sorry,” they mumbled, eyes firm down on the sidewalk. “I slept through it, I guess.”
She only scoffed, but at least they weren’t in real trouble. But then a disgusted look took over her face, and she waved a hand to their hair. “Oh my god, you look like you don’t even have a fucking hairbrush. Ugh, hold on, I think I have something you can use…”
While she rummaged through her purse, Avery gingerly ran their fingers through their hair to try and tame down the mess. They don’t think it worked too well, but it was worth a try, at least.
“Okay, here,” she finally said, pulling out a blue butterfly clip. Then she brushed Avery’s bangs aside and clipped them out of the way of their eyes. “Now maybe you won’t look like you live in a box.”
“Um… Thank you…” They whispered, face pink. Did they really look homeless? Hopefully that didn’t make Megan look bad too…
“Uh-huh. Anyway, I don’t want to be late. Let’s go.”
They went along eagerly, just practiced enough to keep up with her quick pace. And they didn’t worry too much about all the people looking at them both. Because really, they were looking at Megan. And that was okay. As long as they weren’t gawking at Avery.
“So, how’s Lucas doing?” Megan asked out of the blue.
“Huh?” It took them a second to register the question. “Oh, um, you know… He’s doing okay. And, uh, he says thank you for walking me today. He’s really tired, so he appreciates, um… Being able to sleep in and all…”
Megan sneered, like she didn’t quite believe that. “Does he even do anything? Like, what’s even his major?”
Uh-oh. That was a lie they hadn’t come up with yet. Their brain struggled to come up with an answer, rushing a mile a minute through a whole ton of different ideas, but none of them really stuck. Not until they just let one roll of their tongue.
“Theology.”
Megan didn’t even say anything for a moment. She just stared at them. One eyebrow raised. Judging.
“Really? Ew. I hope he likes working in fast food.”
Thank god. Even if she didn’t buy it, they could pretend she did. And that was better than nothing.
“So, like,” she began again, and Avery got the foreboding feeling that this was going to be an interrogation, “does he even help out at all? Like with the dorm?”
“Um…” They didn’t want to say no. But that was the truth. Kind of. “He helps with some things. Not necessarily in keeping everything clean, but… He helps. Really. He’s not as lazy as he seems.” That wasn’t what they wanted to say. “I mean, uh, he’s not lazy at all! He works hard!”
“Oh yeah? What does he even do?”
Well... They couldn’t say that he was the devil, now could they? So instead they just settled on, “He’s got his own little business. I don’t quite understand it, but, um… It doesn’t do too badly, so, you know… As long as it works?”
She obviously didn’t believe them. And it only became more obvious when she said, “I think he’s using you. Like, what kind of mooch sleeps all day, has some shitty business that probably doesn’t do anything, and majors in theology? Like, you can’t do anything with that degree. It’s useless. He’s useless.”
“N-No, he…” Avery couldn’t tell the truth, but they couldn’t keep lying either. What were they supposed to do? “He’s my best friend. And… I don’t know if I’d even be here if it weren’t for him… Please, can we just drop this? He does enough, okay?”
Megan drew her lips into a thin line, and her grip on her books tightened dangerously. “Fine, whatever. How about you tell me about your history crap?”
Well, they could happily do that. Even if they knew it wasn’t really interesting to her.
Things have been a little rough lately, so I’ve been doing more coloring than usual, haha. Thankfully I have my darling to help me through all this, I don’t know where I’d be without him~
