Translate and transform

Another problem i ran into was the time it was taking to translate my pre-wrote messages/letters into the abbreviated code. I wasn’t a massive fan of the font i was using but couldn’t find anything at his point i really really liked and so for the time being i was sticking to the typos face ‘Katharine’ found on adobe fonts which is a vintage/ coding style typeface

I decided to try and make a font that pre translates my writing and that way i could have a custom font that translates as i typed as well as having a more personally style to my designs as it was in my hand writing, heres and example of my template when completed:

I also created a neater version of my handwritten typeface but in regular alphabet to use for any writing on the piece that wouldn’t be coded for exmaple who it was to and the ‘love me’ bit and the title.

After i was set on having it in my handwritten font and being pre-translated as i typed i started ,moving things around to see how i could better fit the pages and different layouts I could do with my final ideas, did i want the images on the same page as the writing or was that going to create very overcrowded spreads, did i want the overlapping writing on the images or not where did i want the text positioned on the page if the image was separate and what would I put with the image if anything at all.

I eventually came to a decision. (Next post is final spread outcomes)

new idea with design started

When i first started designing my pages i decided instead of having some form of typeface to make each spread more personal i wanted to have images of the people i was talking too or writing these little notes too. So that’s what i done, first i took the chosen images into photoshop and gave them each different colour overlays i related them with and then gave them a textured grain to make the images have a style to them.

After editing the images i placed them on the pages and was thinking of having small bits of writing overlapping the images something else i wanted to say to them or quotes(this changes later on) and then underneath the images i wanted the words “letters to the Ines i love.’ Under each image to relate back to the name of this project.

Too add more personal touches i tried out creating simple line illustrations of the things that remind me of the person im talking about but this didn’t fit with he aesthetic i wanted to achieve and ended up taking these out, as i feel it looked tacky and slightly childish.

Translater and transform is our one week project to help us get started and to encoiurage idea flow for our fmp.

Idea 1: Days have colours

My first idea was looking at how we as humans sometimes automatically pair days of the week with a colour for example, Thursday for me would be navy. i researched into this and found out there a more extreme form of this which is neurological called synaesthesia.

The definition of synaesthesia 'perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. For instance, people with synaesthesia may experience colours when listening to music, see shapes when smelling certain scents, or perceive tastes when looking at words.'

I also looked at the 'dress debate' a few years ago where the interenet became devided over a debate ow aght coloura dress was, either blue and balck or white and gold. this i purely down to how everyone percieves coloursa differently and lighting has a part in this also.

Although this idea is interesting, is far to broad for me to be able to translate something from it and transform it into something new in the time i have to complete this project.

Idea 2: Words have colours

Iv been looking at a few different ways data can be translated and I came across a man named Alex beals, I belive he's a programmer. In 2016 he created a website called colorize which translates English words in the dictionary into colours.

Turn any word into a hex color. In this case, 'you' becomes #C6AB97.

My idea for this is by using this tool I could create sentences that are translated into its corresponding colours and placed onto a poster in some sort of way displaying this sentence but for it to be read it has to be translated from colour form back to words. And at the top of the page it just reads 'words have colour' and then underneath is the display of blocks or circles. 

im going to look into this idea further and get some further advice form rich & emily.

I also recently discovered illustrator, Cheyenne Barton on both instagram and youtube and found myself drawn to her loser ‘noodle’ like humans and realised that this approach would be less stressful for learning to draw humans alongside animating and having to repeat drawings over and over and in various poses.

iNiTiAL iDEAS

After talking through feedback from my pre-major project, and under the recommendation of both Joel and Richard - I decided to continue down the path of a fictional narrative. 

“This highly attractive visual language you have developed is very engaging and appropriate for non-fiction outcomes. You are encouraged to pursue the more playful aspects of this submission in MP unit, as towards the end of the book the page format becomes rather predictable and overloaded with information.”

Having had such a positive amount of feedback I started to think about the possibilities of animating and having moving image as my Final Major Project outcome. I had had a fun time creating a cheeky world full of beans within second year and knew from previous feedback how I could improve my animating skills and techniques. 

This was also suggested by tutors:

“You could consider bringing some elements of this into animation, or even gif format, in order to broaden your repertoire but the key area of focus should be developing characters that will illuminate your content.”
