Anyone still watching Wong Fu?

I haven’t really been following them but I went down a youtube procrastination spiral today and decided to check this out. Basically I think this series is supposed to highlight AAPI issues and I have major respect for the creators for trying to give voice to an “invisible model minority” but this first episode, at least for me, fell a little flat. 

Why? Because, as one of the commenters noted, this episode felt way more “tell” rather than “show”. Andrew’s tinder date literally tells him he’s a yappie. The spoken word dude defines the yappie stereotype. You don’t really need acting skills for this series because the script is everything and so this is really just an article disguised as a film series. As a result, what you get from this video is a preachy leftover taste in your mouth, similar to if you read a Huffpost article about AAPIs written by an Ivy league Asian American who used a bunch of vocabulary you’d have to Google define. Some white person even commented on this video and wrote that, “Asians are just whining again because they have a “self-imposed inferiority complex” rather than any true ... struggle.” Because of all this telling rather than showing, what you end up with is a series that started out with good intentions but has a pretentious and preachy deliverance resulting in a message people don’t necessarily accept. It’s meant to be a wake up call to both us and the world that Asians are too invisible in America and that our collective lack of voice is an issue but instead of feeling woke I just feel ... lectured. Maybe even a bit perturbed. Definitely disappointed. 

I know I’m being harsh. Wong Fu is undoubtedly doing something important for the community and I’m just sitting around giving them a hard time - who am I to judge? What skills do I have and what services have I offered? I’m even annoying myself a little as I write this, like why can’t I just clap my hands and be happy for them and their work because it’s already more than I’ve ever done? I’m not trying to be undeservedly judgmental though - I think I’m just really impatient about the progress made so far in amplifying the Asian-American voice. I see shows like Black-ish and am just like dang I like what they’re doing there, balancing humor and serious issues in a relatable and endearing way, but then I watch Fresh off the Boat and just feel disappointed because it feels like an unfunny replay of the same strict + frugal Asian mom stereotype beaten to its literal death. EVEN CREATOR EDDIE HUANG TRASHES IT. He literally tweets that he does not recognize what the show has become. And I can relate to his frustrations because FOTB script feels like it’s being written by white people who have a scattered image of what the Asian-American experience is loosely based on what Eddie actually wrote and more heavily based on their own perceptions, which only scrape the surface of these experiences. Eddie’s pissed, and I can’t blame him.

*Tangent about FOTB* For example, many episodes feature the mom doing some funny things that a lot of Asian moms probably do like being frugal or making grades the biggest deal ever or just generally being strict without reason. But the issue is ... there ARE reasons, and this show doesn’t make any attempt to expose them. So while Asian-American viewers can relate and maybe laugh along to the antics of this mom, if you think about what non Asian-Americans are seeing then you realize they only see half the story but think they see the whole. Do you feel satisfied knowing that your non Asian friends will still only see the stereotypes and not the cultural underpinnings that shaped them and shaped you? FOTB brings a stereotype in (ex. strict Asian mom), makes a joke of it, then moves on to capture another stereotype. It never delves into why said strict Asian mom is the way she is. It doesn’t depict the ugly side of what happens when Asian mom + American raised Asian child clash over cultural differences. Those moments where you feel hopelessly misunderstood by your Asian parents? Where you feel their love for you is conditional and based on your performance? Where you feel drowned by their expectations? Where you even feel ashamed of being Asian? Where you finally realize you made Asian people and Asian parents the enemy when it was really American society making you think that way all along? I don’t think the show can truly capture AAPI experiences growing up without hearing insights from AAPI moms and dads who were born and raised in an Asian country. We need both perspectives if we’re going to construct the complexity of the relationship between us and our parents and really unpack that strict Asian mom stereotype. And we need serious moments in these shows too. 

Blackish is also a comedy but there are quite a few episodes where they get to the heart of the problem and evoke tears from the audience because shit just got too real. I want that. I’m jealous. Our stories are just as interesting. Our stories are also important. I want them shared at that quality. 

I wish the acting in FOTB could be combined with some of the content in Wong Fu’s stuff. Wong Fu targets the important problems but the acting is cringe if you can consider it acting and it’s more of telling than showing. FOTB shows but only shows a story constructed from stereotypes and so devoid of authenticity that even the “producer” left it. And the upcoming movie Crazy Rich Asians really only has “the Asian guy isn’t ugly!” going for it in terms of groundbreaking because the plot is trite and uninteresting. Amidst this backdrop, I’m impatiently craving more. But even my annoyance and impatience is a strange feeling because it’s also mixed with guilt that I am not even doing anything for AAPI voices in American media yet got on a soapbox to criticize based on what? My right as an Asian-American? 

But...maybe that’s enough to give me a right to complain. After all, whose stories are attempted to being told? Ours. Mine. Maybe yours.
